Some Info

Each year, families in Oregon struggle with the agony of having to report a missing loved one. Far too often missing persons investigations grow cold, leaving many to cope with this loss. historically, the law enforcement community's ability to locate and ensure a safe return of those missing has been hampered by an inability to share resources and information when conducting investigations and identifying remains.

In collaboration with experts representing State and local law enforcement, policymakers, forensic scientists, medical examiners and coroners, and crime victims, the U.S. Department of Justice has developed model State legislation. This model legislation seeks to address the national problems of missing persons and the identification of human remains.

Oregon State Senator Kate Brown is sponsoring Senate Bill 351 (at the request of Michelle Duffy in memory of her daughter Miranda Gaddis, Lori Pond in memory of her daughter Ashley Pond, Yvonne and Javier Company in memory of their son Domingo Company-Ramirez)

For copies of the proposed legislation, contact Vicki Kelly, mother Tommy Kelly 1981-1999, at 888 994 5437, TommyFoundation@yahoo.com

"For inquiries outside of the state of Oregon, please contact the Campaign for the Missing facilitator, Kelly Jolkowski of Project Jason at kelly.jolkowski@projectjason.org
This includes persons and organizations interested in volunteering on the campaign, and questions from the media."

A staggering 200,000 children are abducted by a parent or family member in the United States every year.

That means for every stereotypical stranger abduction you hear about, approximately 1,000 family abductions occur. So while the tragedy of stranger abductions is extreme and make headlines, abduction by family members accounts for 78% of all child abduction in America, according to the Department of Justice's most recent national incidence study.

Take Root's members are all adults who were abducted as children by
a parent or family member and taken into hiding.

Fortunately, many good organizations exist to help find and recover missing children. Unfortunately, there has not been much work done to study or lessen the effects this trauma can have on the children's lives. Take Root was formed to give a voice to the missing child. We exist to help the abducted children go from victims to victors!

Together, we can do more than recover missing children.
We can help missing children recover.

If you are a parent or a professional recovering an abducted child, we hope that you will consider using our Kid Gloves approach. If you are a policy maker or a journalist, we hope that our Grotto learning library will broaden your considerations. If you are a parent considering abducting, we hope that you will reconsider. Especially after reading the many member stories of lifelong recovery in The Missing Side.

While we acknowledge that some parents do abduct in response to legitimate abuse, we also know that abduction can never be considered an "appropriate" solution for anything. Instead, domestic violence statutes must be strengthened and enforced so that abduction never becomes a desperate parent's only choice. A life on the run is not a good choice for any child.

We hope our website will help you better understand the impact family abduction has on a child not only in the short-term but also in the long run.

If you were abducted, we hope you will consider joining Take Root.
