Basically Polo shirts were first known as Tennis shirt because in nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, ties, trousers and long sleeves shirts are ordinarily worn by tennis players that was too formal and also disturbs in play. So for the sake of making play ease to players there is 7-time Grand Slam tennis champion Rene Lacoste started to wear his own clothing line and named it Lacoste, and from that time the brand Lacoste and the Polo/Tennis shirt was first invented, Hence from the history you can ay that the Lacoste was the first brand tailored Polo shirts but it is not like that because before Lacoste's 1929 invention for the tennis shirt in late nineteenth century polo players invented a button-down collar shirt with long-sleeves  still those clothes were also discomfort for Polo field and when Polo players comes to know about Lacoste's invention in 1930s the rapidly started to wear it as Polo Shirt. That was the first time when actually Polo Shirt term was aligned with Tennis shirt and become more popular. By 1950s term Polo Shirt was commonly adopted in U.S which gives concept of Tennis Shirt that it was past attire of tennis but fact is that it was not manufactured for Polo.

In 1967, Ralph Lauren started tailoring "Polo Shirt" as original Polo brand, keeping in the mind that it was not geared for Polo players but it was still used normally as Polo wear. Ralph Lauren also adopted the style of Broke Brothers, J. Press and Lacoste main designs which was T-Shaped with a collar down two or three buttons having an optional pocket and two petite slits on the bottom of both sides. They are usually tailored by knitted cloth, pique cotton mixed with silk, wool, merino or synthetic fibers.

The Polo t-shirts continues to use by athletes, used even in casual wears by non-athletes associated with a given sport in their employment, such as caddies, some retired golf professionals, and sports announcers. Polo shirts are also favored for those working outside, like groundskeepers and construction workers due to its austerity and style. During the 1990s, the Polo shirts became the standard informal business wear for the high tech industry and then spread to other industries and termed as business casual. A form of Polo shirts is also used by retail companies. Also in China younger business personals wear Polo shirts as business attire.
