Polyvore Digital Fashion Collages and More...

Polyvore.com is an amazing and social site that helps you make interactive fashion collages of with product photos and other pictures. I am hard to please in terms of websites. For me to spend more than an hour there, a site has to be absolutely AMAZING, and polyvore is just that.

This is a website filled with eye candy. You can make your own fantastic outfits with gorgeous designer items, or just show everyone what you're going to wear on Saturday. Founded by ex-Yahoo'er Pasha Sadri (who created Yahoo Pipes), polyvore started as just fashion, but it has become so much more. People are using polyvore for art collages, interior design, wishlists, and more. Each group of items (called "sets") is interactive and by mousing over any one item in the set you can see a short description of it, and a link to learn more or purchase the item.

Creating a collage is a simple as dragging and dropping products into your "set". Sets are public and viewed by others. Polyvore members can get comments or be favorited; they can be a part of a group, entered into contests, and they can be easily shared. Polyvore provides the simple code to embed a set into a website.

Express YOUR Style

Adding Polyvore Sets To Your Blog or Lens

How to Embed a Polyvore Set Into Your Website

How to embed a polyvore setA polyvore set can add a visual punch to your lens. It's obviously not something you can squeeze into every lens, but some topics would be perfect for a polyvore set.

To properly add a polyvore set to your lens, click on "embed on your blog". Choose the top code (for a blog). Copy and paste this into a text module on your lens. You can also use the description section of many other modules.

In order to display two polyvore sets side by side on your lens (as they are throughout this lens), you can use the code for columns found on thefluffanutta's lens: My Favourite CSS Tricks on Squidoo, and set the height and width of the images to something around 220 pixels.

Polyvore provides badges and feature sets that you can also add to your blogs and websites. You can find them on the profile page at the top where it says "Add Polyvore to my blog". The badges you can add to a squidoo lens, however the featured sets use iframes which are not allowed here on squidoo.com.

Getting Married?

Planning a wedding on polyvore

If you are getting married, then consider creating a few polyvore sets that show what the overall look and feel is for the wedding of your dreams. Make one for the bride's look, and another for the bridesmaids and one more for the men. Bring a copy of these with you to any appointment you have: the wedding planner, the florist, the venue, the bridal boutique. With an idea of the big picture, they can better help you pick the details.

How Can Merchants Use Polyvore to Drive Sales?

Sell YOUR Products By Having them in the Polyvore Library

If you are a merchant, then polyvore is a great tool to promote your brand, get links (and traffic) to your website, and best of all...drive sales.

Add your items to polyvore to be used in sets.

  • Whenever an item is added to a set it provides two links that can get people to your site - one in the image itself, and one on the right in the list of items included in the set. The links are indeed nofollow, in order to prevent spam, however the links can bring traffic, and they are positioned in front of an interested audience. This can be done on a large scale (as sites like bloomingdales.com might do, but it can also be done on a much smaller scale. You can add a few items from your cafepress or zazzle shop, but don't overload the system with one design on a bunch of items - people will become easily annoyed. Add the item or two it looks best on, and that will work best in a set. Learn how to add items to polyvore.

Merchants can run contests.

  • Challenge the polyvore community to make sets with your items and give out a prize. Each set of your items will be like an ad for you always sitting there for the world to see.
  • Check out this contest by forzieri.com for example.

Adding Items to Polyvore

Importing Photos of Products and Backgrounds

In addition to the large library of items already in the polyvore library, you can add your own items to polyvore to be included in sets. It is very simple to add items, but when you do, keep these things in mind:

  • Your items are not just for you. They are added to the library to be used by any polyvore member in their sets - so don't upload a photo of yourself unless you are okay with people using them in any way on their sets.

  • You can create your own artwork that can be used as a backgrounds.

  • You must respect copyright laws and only add photos which you have permission to add. Do not add other people's artwork. Do not assume they would like you to add it. People have rights over their images and they have the right to choose how they are distributed. If you find your images on polyvore and you do not want them there, fill out this online form to have them removed.

  • Some sites are blocked and you cannot clip items from them. Etsy and Flickr for example had members express concerns about their images being used without permission, and so you cannot clip items from there.

  • You should add tags so that others can better find the items to use in their sets - why have a large library if people can't find the items within it.

Polyvore for Collage Art

While polyvore started for fashion sets, its users saw more potential. Since any type of item can be added (as well as photos), many use polyvore to create more elaborate works of art. If you use polyvore to create art, keep in mind the ownership rights of other artists. Do not commit copyright infringement by making derivative works without permission.

On polyvore, anything can inspire you. I created this set that is inspired by our very own Squidoo squid.

It's got a cute dress in that classic orange color and a gorgeous Balenciaga bag to match his eye.

I added some tentacles for good measure.
