Pomeranians Best Companion Dog

Pomeranians are great little pals. They are energetic and clever little canines, who are happy both in and outside. They love to play and are very amusing little clowns, who seem to excel at learning new tricks. They seem to be able to amuse themselves wherever they are and love to be with their people.

The Pomeranian is happy sitting on your lap, as well as outdoors on a long hike. They make excellent family dogs as well as, companions for seniors. They are a very low maintenance and long lived breed and are increasingly popular in the U.S.

The Pomeranian, Perfect Companion Dog

Pomeranians are a Feisty and Energetic Breed

Descended from the Spitz family specifically the sled dogs of Lapland and Iceland, Pomeranians were originally big, sturdy herders of sheep. Over time, they were bred down to a smaller size, becoming cherished pets of Marie Antoinette, Mozart and (famously) Queen Victoria, whose preference for small Pomeranians created a worldwide demand. During the late 1800s they came to the U.S., and the American Pomeranian Club held its first show in 1911. SInce then, their good temper and small size have made them an enduring favorite in the U.S.

Pomeranians are very intelligent and courageous little creatures, that live an active lifestyle. They may not be quite so friendly with little children, because their small and delicate size may lead to their being mishandled. In any case, Pomeranians make excellent watchdogs, although they are prone to bark excessively, unless trained not to. The Pomeranian can also be difficult to housetrain, though they are very smart and will train with lots of time and patience. The key to housetraining with a Pom, is making frequent trips outdoors, since their small bladders simply are not equipped to hold very much.

It is easy to care for a Pomeranian. Brushing every few days is much more important than bathing. When fed a good quality food, they rarely shed coat, especially the males (females do shed after whelping!) Pomeranians eat very little, so it is not expensive to feed the best food that you can afford. They make wonderful companions, but please ensure that small children are supervised so that the puppy is not dropped or hurt. Because the Pomeranian is a small dog and could accidentally be injured, they are not generally recommended as a pet if you have very small children. Injuries can occur from falls, jumping off furniture, being stepped on, etc. If well cared for, they can live up to 18 years!

Miniature Watchdogs: The Pomeranian is an active dog who is intelligent, courageous, and a loyal companion. The Pomeranian may not interact well with small children, and due to its small size can suffer abuse from children. Pomeranians have proven themselves to be excellent watchdogs by announcing intruders with loud, sharp barks. The Pomeranian easily adapts to life in the city, and is an excellent dog for country living with its strong hunting instincts from its wild ancestors. Pomeranians are generally a healthy, hardy, and long-lived breed. Poms often live 12 to 16 years or more.

The Pomeranian is one of the smallest dog breeds in the world. He stands 8 - 11 inches at the shoulder, and weighs only 3 - 7 pounds. His physical characteristics make him susceptible to injury. For this reason, it is important that children are taught how to properly play with the dog, and that everyone in the family is conscious of where the dog is at all times, as he can be easily stepped or sat on.

These small dogs are vibrant and entertaining. They take on their owner's habits and love attention. Though they can be a little hard to train, they are very loyal, loving and willing to please.

Speaking of training, the Pom is a quick learner. That being said, it is imperative that the Pomeranian is taught that their owner is boss. If you let a Pomeranian walk all over you, he'll no longer listen to you, and become extremely possessive and demanding of you. In addition, a Pomeranian should also be well socialized, or he could become suspicious or show aggression towards strangers.

Living Environment: Apartment or house, city or country, Pomeranians thrive in a busy family atmosphere and love to be pampered. Poms make an excellent companion for the elderly. Some Poms do best in an adult only home. The best owner for this breed would be an adult owner living in a city environment.
