Record Of Pompei

When one hears the word, "Pompei," the first thing that comes to mind is history and the images that accompany the word.

Pompei was one of the cities destroyed by Mount Vesuvius, literally buried under volcanic lava and ash for centuries prior to being discovered in 1700s. The volcano is still active today.

RICORDO DI POMPEI - 32 VEDUTE is a very old book, to the best of my knowledge it was a tour book composed in the 1930s, with pictures pertaining to the ruins of Pompei. This little tour guide briefly describes a city in ruins that is still being excavated for historic and cultural purposes.

Pompei History is based on the information in this little book that was given to me long ago.

The Pompei Museum

The museum is situated at the entrance to the Marina Gate. It contains an interesting collection of relics of the destroyed city. There are implements and plaster moulds of animals and persons, and victims of the disaster, which include the body of a woman reproduced in the position in which she was found.

The Amphitheater

This is a cololssal Roman ediface, oval in shape, capable of seating 40,000 spectators. It is divided into three tiers, and measures 130 meters long and 120 meters wide. Here were held the great Olympic games and fights between gladiators and wild beasts.

A General View Of Pompei

Seen from above, one gains an exact idea of the topography of the city and the Roman plan of construction. Pompei was buried in 79 AD by a terrible eruption of the neighboring Vesuvius volcano. Charles III of Bourbons started the excavation in 1755.

Mercury's Road

Mercury's Road starts with the arch of Caligula from what remains of a bronze equestrian statue, and finishes with a tower of walls.

The House Of The Vetti

The House of the Vetti is a magnificent building among those in the best state of preservation. Rich decorations representing the better known mythological subjects, and by the best artists of those times, can be admired in it. There are 18 Corinthian columns in the peristyle. Well preserved marble and bronze statues are in the garden kept up in the old style, where the fountains are still playing. Kitchen utensils and two bronze safes are still in good state of preservation.

I visited Pompeii in 2006, but did not know much of the history. Still it was a very interesting day trip, I would definitely be interested in re-visiting after reading this lens. Will forward it to my friends who are currently backpacking in Europe!
