Step by Step: Pom Poms
You can create these pom poms out of any material that you can find. Colored trash bag and yarn are the usual materials used. However, you can also use crepe paper for this as it makes the pom pom poofier, although its lifespan may be shorter than the other two materials as it can easily tear and rip with a few over enthusiastic shakes. Yarn pompoms also tend to be a puffier and more authentic look but it takes forever and you would need a lot of yarn to create the poof factor we are trying to get so the easiest would be to go with trash bag or bin liners for material.
You first line up a number of then on top of the other. Line them up with all the open sides on side and the closed ends all together. Use as much bags as you want, the more you use, the bigger the pompom will be. Make sure you use plain trash bags and not with the extra piece of plastic strip that's used to tie the tops with. If you do, make sure to cut those off first. Fold all the trash bin liners in half from top to bottom.
Then carefully, with a pair of scissors, cut through all of the layers of the trash bags and start to snip from the folded end of the bags and work your way towards the other end. Do not cut all the way through. Make the strips as fine or as thick as you want. The thinner the cuts will be, the harder it is to make consistent cuts with your bags but it will definitely have a more authentic pom pom look. Snip the folds away without disturbing the folds and the layers of the bags.
After all the cutting, you gently roll up the uncut ends into the shape of the pom pom handle. Take your time, the trash bags will be slippery and a few layers will make it harder to handle. Once you have it rolled up, secure it all over with some tape, electrical tape would be a great idea since it will also serve as a good grip when you start thrashing your pom poms around.
Now simply dampen your hands and start to unravel all the strips from the bunch. Head towards the game and cheer yourself silly with your new pom pom crafts.
