Thanks for your help and suggestions in building our pond. It is looking good. I don't think anyone is ever done with a pond. Always more fun stuff to plant or rocks to push around, etc. Enjoy this lens. I favorited it too!

I am trying to access how to build a pond but it is saying there is an error and will not let me. What I am looking for is a small pond for my back yard low maintenance fun for kids (goldfish) and I have a pump that is good for 250 gallons with a waterfall or a 500 gallon with no waterfall. Any ideas??? I am a first time pond builder with a very limited budget. I live in the country with lots of rocks!!
  • pondlady May 13, 2009 @ 6:08 am | delete
It is the koi that is causing your murkiness. Koi root around and they poop a lot. That's what all that sludge is.
    [in reply to Believe2255]
  • Believe2255 May 13, 2009 @ 5:55 am | delete
I love this lens. There are is so much info. I added it to my favorites so that I can return to it.
We have a natural pond fed by a spring. It's tough to keep all the sludge out that washes down over the hill. I love having the pond, however even when the water is clear you can see the sludge and dirt at the bottom. We scoop out the goop everyday but no matter what we do it's still murky looking. I'm not sure if there is anything that can be done to get rid of this. We still do enjoy it, especially when we have koi. ( a crane ate all but one of our fish).
  • pondlady Mar 8, 2009 @ 11:43 am | in reply to maggie | delete
Wow, what a mess. I would go to the nearest plumbing supply house and buy a pump that will handle solid material up to 1/2" if you can afford it. A swimming pool supply house will have blue hose that you can attach to it.
Now about the pipe. That might take a plumber with a long snake. Or a plumber with another idea completely. I would check there first.
  • maggie Mar 8, 2009 @ 10:49 am | delete
    Hi PondLady,

URGENT! We must drain our large (1/4 acre?) spring fed farm pond to do maintenance to the 400 ft antique underground outflow pipe that is clogged. This pipe runs UNDER our house! The pond is not draining and is flooding our yard, threatening the house. Help! What brand, power and kind of pump do you recommend and where would we buy? How would you approach the cleaning of such a long pipe? Any suggestions or referrals would help tremendously. Thanks.
  • casey_whitford Aug 20, 2008 @ 6:57 am | delete
This a great lens! Very informative. Our pond is a bit larger than what you are talking about. Our pond was built for both swimming and fishing and is about 1/4 acre in size. We also have a system that feeds our fish live food, and all we do is add ordinary kitchen scraps to make BioGrubs that the fish love to eat. Check out our lens and let me know what you think.
    Thanks,
    Casey

I really want to put a pond in my backyard, once I reclaim it. Right now it's all trees and swamp gunk. My goal is to relocate all the water that collects in the spring into a pond instead of the whole back yard. I think it's going to take A LOT of work though. Plus a lot of money.
I think reading through all your info and sites will help though. You've got so much great info.

Cory, bringing in wild critters into your pond usually leads to disaster. I am interpreting your question to mean you went fishing and brought your catch back and put them in your pond. Your best bet now is to take one of the fish to a local pet store and ask what meds to use.

Gail, you don't need an electrician. Put the light where you want it and plug it in. Never hardwire any pond equipment. If you do that, then you will have to have the electrician back when the light burns out or the pump needs replacing.

Your more than welcome, I would love to see a koi pond article. They're being so popular these days, and I know many are very interested in the koi pond. From what I have read it's almost a real art to them.

I know koi ponds, but koi diseases, I know nothing at all about. I shall have to do an article on koi ponds soon.
    Thanks for your kind comment.

For a pumpless pond, use plenty of submerged vegetation and keep at least 1/2 of the water surface covered with floating plants. I would suggest adding mosquito fish to keep any mosquitoes from breeding.

We are wanting to add a small pond in our yard without a pump. Any suggestions on maintenance?

Bonnie, scroll a little ways up to 'Self Contained Small Ponds' and click there to read an article I wrote a few week ago. It should give you a few ideas.

Your ponds are absolutely marvelous! Works of awe... thank you for sharing them. I'd like to create one myself, but I have a limited backyard. Any suggestions on how I can create an aspiring pond for a smaller backyard? (I can mow the grass there in less than 30 minutes, it seems.)

Is there any place to get a solar powered pump for my backyard pond? Thus far, it is a "quiet" pond with pests controlled by fish and frogs.

Heather, build up, but don't kill the roots. Then put a liner in ONE piece all around the tree. Where the two ends of the liner meet, put them up on top of the cinder block wall you have built across the pond, so water cannot leak under. Build a waterfall there and cover the block wall with rocks.
  • Heather G May 16, 2007 @ 8:04 pm | delete
I have the perfect place to build a pond, HOWEVER, there would be a tree in the center. Can I pull this off? What do I do about the liner around the tree? I have to build up because of the roots of this huge tree. What do you suggest?

  • pondlady May 8, 2007 @ 1:26 pm | delete
Wow, that's one huge pond. Once you get clean water in the pond, you must add dechlor and do a few other simple things. Check http://www.gardenandhearth.com/Backyard-Ponds/Cleaning-the-Garden-Pond.htm
for the step by step stuff. Don't panic, the hard part is done.

I am renting a house that has a very neglected pond and waterfall, I have cleaned out most of the two years worth of leaves in it, where do I go from here to get it going? The landlady has promised to bring a new pump this weekend. Oh, it's an 8,000 gal pond!

I'm not Caryn, I'm Jan Goldfield, the pondlady, but try this guy for your pondless waterfall. He has the most ingenious way of building a pondless waterfall I have ever seen.

Hi, I am wanting to know if you are aware of any kits in the US that I can buy that are "disappearing rock ponds". I want water that my kids can play with but I don't want the danger of drowning. I am wary of building my own from scratch even though I have good diy directions. Thanks

Marilyn, in the interest of water conservation, such a great concern these days, I would use a pondless waterfall or a pot with water spilling into a small basin. That keeps maintenance down to a minimum and water use as well.
  • Marilyn Mar 6, 2007 @ 9:42 am | delete
I live in San Antonio, TX where it's hot, humid and not alot of rain. Any ideas for what kind of small backyard pond would work? No fish though. Thanks.
  • pondlady Mar 6, 2007 @ 8:16 am | delete
Sophenix, start feeding your fish when the temperatures are consistenly over 55 degrees F, even at night.
  • pondlady Mar 6, 2007 @ 8:15 am | delete
Sadie, for the high desert, I would stick to something like a pondless waterfall or a pot that had water spilling over it. That way you will conserve water.
  • pondlady Mar 6, 2007 @ 8:08 am | delete
Beasong, I doubt that you will need a fence. Most wild ducks and geese are pretty adept at avoiding predators. Just be sure your pond meets all local guidelines for safety re children falling in.

I live in Atlanta, GA and it's been a cold winter. I stopped feeding my fish for the winter -- when do I restart?

  • BeaSong Mar 6, 2007 @ 12:11 am | delete
We want to make a 1/2 acre pond to attract the Geese and ducks, but don't know if we'll need a fence to protect them from other critters.

Raccoons are the most difficult animal to keep away from your pond. I usually use plant material that has prickery leaves like asparagus fern or holly. You can also try 'marking your territory' like other animals do. You must repeat after every rain. It's easier for men to do this than women.
  • pondlady Mar 5, 2007 @ 10:37 pm | delete
I just received a question from Marifran Connelly about keeping raccoons away from your pond. They eat fish adn plants every chance they get.
  • pondlady Feb 26, 2007 @ 12:38 pm | delete
If your pond is frozen over, do not hit it with a hammer to open a hole in the ice. Run water from the hose over it or put a pan of warm water on your ice. If you use a hammer, the concussion can kill your fish.
  • pondlady Feb 21, 2007 @ 7:17 pm | delete
Capp, here's the formula for figuring out how many gallons of water you have: length of pond x width x depth x 7.5 = gallons of water. There are 7.5 gallons of water in one cubic foot of water. Hard to believe, isn't it?
  • capp3736 Feb 21, 2007 @ 6:39 pm | delete
How do I know how much water I have in my pond?

    Thank you.
  • pondlady Feb 21, 2007 @ 1:07 pm | delete
Daphan, if you add less than 10% of water by volume, you don't need to add a dechlorinator. If you are adding a substantial amount, be sure to add dechlor. A good idea is to change about 10% of your water each week. Pump the old water into a veggie or flower bed. There is no better fertilizer.
  • daphan Feb 21, 2007 @ 12:41 pm | delete
How do I add water to my small pond because of evaporation? I live in So. Texas, am not sure how to treat the added water.
  • pondlady Feb 7, 2007 @ 5:19 pm | delete
Carolyn, I am so glad you decided to go ahead with a pond. I know you will love it. Florida opens up a whole new world and MUCH longer season for you to enjoy your koi.
  • Carolkoi Feb 7, 2007 @ 5:12 pm | delete
Your site is the best! What a great place to find information on ponds, my favorite subject, and how absolutely knowledgeable you are! Thank you Jan. I've decided to build a pond after all. I went to closing on the Home Equity Line of Credit today, signed all the paperwork and want to do it now.
  • pondlady Jan 30, 2007 @ 5:29 pm | delete
I would always start with Comet Goldfish. They are definitely the hardiest fish. The trendiest are probably the fanciest koi. They can cost hundreds, even thousands of dollars. I prefer a goldfish for about a buck and a half. And don't name it!
  • MeganCasey Jan 30, 2007 @ 3:04 pm | delete
