PONDS IN THE SUMMER

Now that summer is here its time to get your pond in shape for the good weather, and keeping it that way all summer long. It might be your first time having a pond in summer or maybe you need more tips for keeping your pond nice all summer long. Either way this article is filled with wonderful ideas for your pond.

ALGAE BUILD UP

When the temperature in your pond water increases the ability to "hold" oxygen levels diminishes. Which makes breathing for your inhabitants almost impossible. Some ways that can help cool your pound off and raise the oxygen levels is by having a waterfall, fountain, or aerators. By having higher oxygen levels you can also control algae buildup. You can also add some floating water plants to add shade and keep your water cool. Considers adding lilies, parrots feathers, water lettuce, and hyacinths to get the job done. During the hot weather make sure that you don't feed your fish as much. They tend to produce a lot of waste in hotter climates, which can create an algae buildup. SHOWN IN THE PIC TO THE RIGHT. IF THIS DOES HAPPEN YOU CAN BUY WATER TREATMENTS TO FIX THE PROBLEM.

The warm weather can be really hard on most pond fish. You should watch and observe your fish frequently. If your fish begin going to the surface and look as if they are gasping, especially around waterfalls or fountains then there is a serious problem at hand. Make sure that you add an air pump and air stone so that the circulating and water-cools down for your fish. You may also need to move some of your fish to another area because your pond might be over populated. Your fish might need more space in the watergarden because they have grown over the past months.

MORE SUMMER POND KEEPING TIPS

Summer is also a great time to take vacations, which is what many people end up doing. Especially during the holidays. It's also a great way to spend time with your family, but while you're away don't forget about your pond. Make sure that before you leave all of your filters are clean and that you find someone to watch over your pond every 3 days. There are automatic feeders that can feed your fish, but if YOUR pump turns off, your watergarden will be in trouble. So it is a good idea to have a friend keep an eye on your pond just in case anything bad occurs.

Another great thing about summer is the lovely mosquitoes. Luckily there are many ways in which we can control are little friends. You can use pond insecticides such as dunks, mosquito pond control, mosquito bits, and mosquito repellent granules. There are even bat house where a single bat will eat as many as 1,000 mosquitoes in one night. If you don't want to break your pocketbook there are of course cheaper ways to keep the mosquitoes at bay. Such as decreasing the amount of standing water in your pond by including a waterfall or fountain.

The summer is the best time of year to own a watergarden. So be thankful that you can enjoy its beauty. I hope that you have learned some useful tips for keeping you watergarden beautiful all summer long.

OTHER SUMMER FUN IDEAS

If you haven't figures it out by now, the best time to have a breath taking watergarden is in the summer. The weather is nice, and you couldn't ask for better scenery. There are so many different ways to show off your watergarden to your neighbors and friends this summer .

Most women like to show off their watergarden's by actually hosting a planting party. Typically the woman of the home will invite over a few friends and have a few plants in which they would like to go in their watergarden. You can also encourage your friends to bring some plants in which they would like to go in your garden. Have them bring over a few tools or you can already have some lain out. This can be a fun way to actually incorporate your friends with your watergarden letting them feel as if they had a part of adding to its beauty. Make sure you have some snacks and lemonade to replenish your quests.

We all know that the best holiday of the summer is the 4th of July. There's no better way to show off your waterfeatures then with a great 4th of July party. You can have a barbeque, invite over a few friends and of course fireworks. Your friends will love to see the beautiful displays bounce off your pond's water. If you don't have a chance to throw a 4th of July party you can also just have a barbeque or themed party to invite over a couple of friends. There's this one couple I know, ever year they throw a huge Hawaiian party filled with Hawaiian decorations to get everyone in the sprit, and of course you can't come in unless you're dressed for the fun.

Another great way to enjoy your summer waterfeatures is by having a book club. There's nothing better than sitting around a watergarden listening to the water and discussing a great book. Your friends will love to see your fish swimming around and gazing into the water. Their imaginations will run wild as they sit in such an amazing dreamy atmosphere.

There are things you can do with your family everyday to incorporate your watergarden. You can serve dinner every night on the patio listening to the water, sitting around with your lovely family and just enjoying the summer breeze. You can even lay out blankets and have a picnic by your garden. Some families even like to take a portable television and just lay outside watching a movie and enjoying the summer air. There are a million different ways to enjoy the summer and your watergarden so do what's best for you and enjoy the summer.

A MAN SWIMMING WITH HIS KOI FISH

Koi - Feb 16th 2007

Koi. Put my digital camera ( not water proof )into a new clean plastic bag and dunked it into the pond. I would not recommend doing this. Pond is just over 3 years old. Aprox 5500gal. turned 2+ times per hour. roughly 50 total Koi ranging from 5" - 32". Many of them are tame enough to pet and will eat from the hand. Had a algae bloom recently and had just turned off the aerators, so the water is churned up & no where near as clear as it should be. That and I made the mistake of using a plastic bag that was to thick so it's a little milky. Next time I will probably use a thinner, clearer bag. We are installing a Bakke shower and will hopefully be back to crystal clear again soon. Many of the larger fish will be transferred into a 24000gal. pool/pond in early Summer/late Fall of 07, we hope.
