Pontiac GTO - Pioneer of the Golden Age of Muscle Cars
The Pontiac GTO was introduced in 1964, and it is now widely recognized as the first muscle car. In the years that followed, every major American automaker began using the same concept that Pontiac an used in the GTO: cram a powerful engine in a relatively light car frame. The original GTO would be sold from 1964 until 1974. It started as a trim option on a Pontiac LeMans coupe, but it would quickly grow in popularity and become its own model line. By combining a powerful Tri-Power engine with a 2 door coupe body (also sold as a convertible), the GTO could beat just about anything on the streets in the mid-1960's.
1969 saw the introduction of the now highly collectible Pontiac GTO Judge. The Judge was a performance version of the standard GTO, with a Ram Air II engine and the popular Hurst shifter.
The GTO made a comeback in 2004. The new Pontiac GTO featured a body borrowed from the Holden Monaro and a LS1 or LS2 engine that can also be found in the Chevrolet Corvette. The new GTO was discontinued after 2006.
Some of the more highly-prized GTO's are from the late 1960's and early 1970's, especially the convertibles and those with Triple Black color combinations or those painted with one of the specialty paint colors like Orbit Orange (introduced with The Judge models).
You can see a real Pontiac GTO Judge during the opening scene of the cult classic movie "Dazed and Confused". The car is driven by the character Kevin Pickford and is used at various times during the movie.

The relaunch of the GTO was in fact a fully imported rebadged Holden Monaro, with a long history of "V* Muscle Cars" behind it. The marque was not however very successful in either Australia or the US.
