Always watch where you are going. Otherwise, you may step on a piece of the Forest that was left out by mistake. ~Pooh's Little Instruction Book, inspired by A.A. Milne
Young Christopher Robin, the son of author A. A. Milne was Winnie's owner and protector.
Christopher changed his bears name from Edward to Winnie the Pooh in honor of a black bear named Winnie who was a favorite of his at the London zoo and Pooh a swan who lived at his country house, Cotchford Farm in Sussex.
The Hundred-Acre-Wood was of course, based on life at Cotchford Farm.
Mr. Milne watched his son at play with his stuffed animals and started to write a series of books based on their adventures.
When We Were Very Young (1924)
Winnie-the-Pooh (1926)
Now We Are Six (1927)
The House at Pooh Corner (1928)
The beautiful illustrations in these books, that made the world of Pooh come alive for us were done by E.H. Shepard.
The Pooh books were favorites of Walt Disney's daughter Diane and in 1966 he brought the fluff filled bear to life on film.
Pooh and his friends have been immortalized in books, in movies and on the television screen. The books alone have been published in more than 25 languages. We love pooh and his bumbling adventures. Give this bear some honey, he'll thank you with a smile.

The Original Winnie the Pooh
It was the first World War, troops from Winnipeg (Manitoba, Canada) were being transported to eastern Canada, on their way to Europe, where they were to join the 2nd Canadian Infantry Brigade. When the train stopped at White River, Ontario, a lieutenant called Harry Colebourn bought a small female black bear cub for $20 from a hunter who had killed its mother. He named her 'Winnipeg', after his hometown of Winnipeg, or 'Winnie' for short.Winnie became the mascot of the Brigade and went to Britain with the unit. When the Brigade was posted to the battlefields of France, Colebourn, now a Captain, took Winnie to the London Zoo for a long loan. He formally presented the London Zoo with Winnie in December 1919 where he became a popular attraction and lived until 1934.
Winnie became the favorite of Christopher Robin, son of author A.A. Milne. He liked her so much he changed the name of his stuffed bear from Edward the bear to Winnie the Pooh. Pooh was added in honor of a swan that lived at his family's country home.
