A Short History of Pool and Billiards

Many people who enjoy the game of pool or billiards may not know that the game started out as a lawn game way back in the 1400's. Eventually the game was moved indoors and played on a table with sides being added to the table to prevent the balls from rolling off.

France is believed to be the first country that got into billiards in a big way. The game was first played by the royalty and they got other royals from other countries into the game. The whole of Europe eventually joined in and, as more and more tables were built, the common folk started to enjoy the game as well.

The modern cue stick evolved from the mace or mallett used in croquet. The head of the mallett was dropped and just the handle or "queue" was used, thus resulting in the modern name "cue" stick. The leather tip and cue chalk were invented in the 1800's.

The first recorded pool table was owned by Louis XI of France in 1470. Billiards tables are believed to have been introduced to the US in the 1600's. George Washington is know to have played and by the 1800's billliards was popular in the US.

The first billiards balls are believed to have been made of stone, with wooden balls following later. Eventually they were made of ivory from elephant tusks. When elephants became scarce they were made of different types of plastics, with phenolic resin being the material of choice today.

The words "pool" and "billiards" actually have somewhat different meanings. Pool or pocket billiards is played on a table having six pockets, where different games are played that involve shooting the balls into the pockets. Billiards usually means playing on a table with no pockets and playing games that involve banking the balls off the rails and into each other.

Pool and billiards are popular all over the world and there are several organizations that oversee tournaments, promotion, and rules administration among other things.
