Here's My Herman the Merman Quest Music Lens!

I was struggling to think of a lens about music to complete my Herman quest, when I started thinking about the song "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" - not sure why, but I did. Anyway, this got me thinking and I came up with the idea for a lens about songs with cats in the name. So, I racked my brains and came up with the following songs.

Please note: these songs aren't necessarily about cats, they just have the word "cat" (or "tiger" or "lion" or "puss") in their title. Hope you enjoy them!

Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats

From 'CATS the Musical'

Cats is one of the most famous musicals ever produced. Chances are that if you have not seen it yourself you will know at least someone who has. The show has been running for decades and has toured the world and is still going strong today.

'Jellicle Cats' is the opening number and is performed by the whole cast. It sets the stage for what is to come by giving us glimpses of the various cats who will appear throughout the rest of the show.

Black Cat - Janet Jackson

From the Album 'Rythm Nation 1814'

'Black Cat' was the sixth single from Janet Jackson's album 'Rythmn Nation 1814'. A global hit, the song reached number 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.

'Black Cat' was one of three songs written by Ms Jackson on the album. As an unapologetically out there rock song, 'Black Cat' was a marked change from the many pop/r&b songs that she had recorded previously. Turn it up LOUD!

Cats in the Cradle - Ugly Kid Joe

From the Album 'America's Least Wanted'

This 1992 cover version of the Harry Chapin classic 'Cats in the Cradle' was a surprise hit for American hard rock band Ugly Kid Joe. One of the stand out tracks on the well received album 'America's Least Wanted', 'Cats in the Cradle' was successful around the world, selling 500,000 copies in the US and reaching #7 in the UK.

Purists may be upset that I have featured the Ugly Kid Joe version of this song rather than the Harry Chapin original. Both versions are good in their own way, but, as with the 'Lion Sleeps Tonight', I just prefer this version.

'What's New Pussycat' - Tom Jones

From the 'Whats' New Pussycat' Soundtrack

Originally recorded for the soundtrack of the 1965 comedy of the same name, 'What's New Pussycat?' has been recorded by a number of well-known singers including Bobby Darin, Tony Bennett and the Four Seasons. But the singer that it will forever be associated with is Tom Jones. Over the years, Mr Jones has made this song his own and it is hard to imagine anyone else singing it with the same gusto.

I'm not sure when this clip was filmed, but it's a lot of fun and takes us back to a different time when one of the biggest names in showbiz could appear on TV wearing a bow tie that big without anyone thinking it was odd. A better, happier world for sure.

Eye of the Tiger - Survivor

From the Album 'Eye of the Tiger'

This 1982 smash hit for American rock band 'Survivor' has to be amongst the most well-known '80s songs and one of the biggest sellers. The theme to Sylvester Stallone's 'Rocky III', 'Eye of the Tiger' is one of the most popular motivational songs of all time and has been covered by dozens of bands.

It is without doubt the toughest song in this list and all of the other songs will be nodding their heads and singing along in awe as you play it.

Adam Ant - 'Puss 'n Boots'

From the Album 'Strip'

Without doubt, Adam Ant was at the cutting edge of the early '80s New Romantic pop scene. After achieving huge musical success with 'Adam and the Ants', he left to start a solo career which continues to this day. His second solo effort was 1983's 'Strip' and 'Puss in Boots' was the 6th track off the album.

This song is essentially a retelling of the story of 'Puss in Boots', as told in song and dance by an eccentric former pirate and his lovely friend. Only in the '80s would this have made sense.

ABBA - Tiger

From the Album - 'Arrival'

Tiger is a track from ABBA's 1977 album 'Arrival'. Something of a hidden treasure, 'Tiger' was overshadowed by the monster hits 'Dancing Queen', 'Money,Money,Money' and 'Knowing Me, Knowing You', three of ABBA's biggest hits. It's one of their edgier songs (yes, ABBA could be edgy) and is a departure from the catchy pop that they are best known for.

Crank it up as you drive through the bad part of town and you will win instant respect.

Love Cats - The Cure

From the Album 'Japanese Whispers'

Over the years The Cure have recorded a number of really interesting songs and I have to admit to being a fan. The 1983 hit 'Love Cats' was one of their most successful recordings and marked a shift from their Goth/Punk roots. An up beat, jazzy song, it's quit catchy and is a change of pace from the other '80s songs featured in this lens.

Stray Cat Strut - Stray Cats

From the Album 'Stray Cats'

In 1981 American Rockabilly band the 'Stray Cats' released their self-titled debut album. 'Stray Cat Strut' was one of their debut singles off of the album and went on to become one of their biggest and best known hits. Simple yet seriously cool, this track is the perfect way to end this lens. Enjoy.
