What Is Popera?
Popera is a fusion of classically trained singers with popular music. Critics may poke holes in the idea of popera, but there's something compelling about a classically trained voice combined with upbeat music.
While popera has become, well, popular lately, I first heard the term when it was coined by friends of mine, Armand and Angelina. Like many ideas, they weren't the only ones to come up with it, even to picking the same term to describe what they were doing.
Let's Hear From You!
Armand and Angelina
Their tag line is, "A Musical Ministry", because they often play at churches after delivering an inspirational message.
Angelina is the classically trained voice in their Popera work. If you click through to their website and click on the Music link on the left, you can hear samples of their music.
"Hotter than Ever" features some of their popera work, and you have to hear Angelina sing Amazing Grace to believe it.
Armand does a little bit of everything, playing flutes and delivering inspirational messages. Armand is a bit of a joker, which comes through in his music. Coyote Spirit in their Sacred Flute Journeys CD is a great example of this.
Il Divo
Il Divo was created specifically to perform Popera, and with a specific marketing angle in mind. The members were selected not only for their musical ability, but for their looks.
While this may seem like an unromantic way to form a group, it's hard to argue with their success.
Lots more info on Il Divo can be found on their website, or over at Wikipedia's article on them.

What Do You Think?
Is Popera a great new form of music, or a mishmash that shouldn't be allowed to exist?
