Popeye Halloween Costumes
Well, Blow Me Down!
Popeye the Sailor Man
Star of Thimble Theater

Popeye the Sailor first appeared in the King Features daily comic strip "Thimble Theater" on January 17th, 1929. The character was created by Elzie Crisler Segar and soon became the focus of the strip, which became one of King Feature's most popular titles during the 1930s. After Segar's death in 1938 the strip was retitled "Popeye".
In 1933, Fleischer Studios began to adapt the "Thimble Theater" characters into a series of theatrical cartoon shorts for Paramount Pictures. This continued all the way through 1957. In time, Popeye would also appear in comic books, advertisements, television cartoons during the 1960s, and as a video arcade game. In 1980, a live-action musical based on the character was directed by Robert Altman. The film starred Robin Williams as Popeye and Shelley Duvall as Olive Oyl.
Popeye's theme song "I'm Popeye the Sailor Man" was compsed by Sammy Lerner in 1933 for the first Popeye the Sailor cartoon produced by Fleischer Studios.
Popeye the Sailor
I yam what I yam and tha's all what I yam.

Abandoned by his father, Poopdeck Pappy, this one-eyed runt of a sailor was born in a typhoon off the coast of Santa Monica, CA. With thinning red hair and bulgy forearms that sport anchor tattoos, Popeye is in love with miss Olive Oyl. He has an adopted infink son called Swee'Pea and his main rival for Olive's affections is Bluto.
When Popeye eats spinach he becomes invincible, able to fight off Bluto or any other foe. He's bluntly honest and always has the back of a good friend in any fight, but don't double-cross him! He's Popeye, the Sailor Man!

Olive Oyl
Help, Popeye! Save me!

This lanky beanpole of a dame is Olive Oyl, Popeye's girlfriend! Born in New York City, her family consists of Cole, Nana, and Castor Oyl. Popeye considers her a perfect 57 -- her measurements are 19-19-19!
Most often Olive is a damsel in distress, being pursed (and sometimes kidnapped) by Popeye's rival Bluto. When she's not in need of rescue, Olive helps to care for and raise orphan Swee'Pea.
Swee' Pea
Popeye's adopted infink

Affectionally known as Swee'Pea, Popeye actually christened his adopted infink son "Scooner Seawell Georgia Washenting Christiffer Columbia Daniel Boom" all the way back in 1933.
Sometimes Swee'Pea is depicted as the Crown Prince of Demonia, hidden in Popeye's care. Alice the Goon sometimes acts as Swee'Pea's babysitter.
Bluto
The big baddie rival of Popeye

The large, bushy-bearded, musclebound nemesis of Popeye goes by the name of Bluto. Loud and harsh, with a tendency to growl, Bluto is attracted to Popeye's girlfriend Olive Oyl.
Usually after Bluto has kidnapped Olive and beat up Popeye, Popeye eats some spinach and is able to defeat Bluto and save the day!
Popeye (1980)
Starring Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall!
Popeye
"The sailor man with the spinach can!" -- This 1980 feature film was a live-adaptation musical based on the "Popeye the Sailor" cartoon. Directed by Robert Altman, the film featured Robin Williams (in his feature film debut) as Popeye and Shelley Duvall as Olive Oyl. The film follows Popeye as he lands in the small coastal town of Sweet Haven, in search of his missing father, Poopdeck Pappy. Along the way he meets the Oyl family, causes a stir amongst the locals, gets in a fight with Olive's fiancee Bluto, and adopts Swee'Pea.
