I'm going to describe the elements of Popular Music such as Soul, Rhythm 'n' Blues, Folk, Rock 'n' Roll, and Folk Rock. I'll look at the effects of one particular group of musicians, the Beatles, on America and England during the early 1960s.

I'll also trace some of the musical features and ideas of various musicians such as Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Rolling Stones and The Who.

Popular Musicians during this period of time

Emmylou Harris
Heartbreak Mountain: The win for the achingly beautiful song from "Brokeback Mountain," "A Love That Will Never Grow Old," sung by Emmylou Harris, who should be proclaimed a national treasure.
Joan Baez
There aren't many in showbiz like Baez. Forty years ago she was the dorky folk singer with the pure voice and the severe expression who, through sheer force of sincerity, won out as the symbol of her generation over hipper rivals. By her own admission she has only had two real hits, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down and Diamonds and Rust, but the music was always less important to her than the message and the message less important than something else, something rather vague, which in the 1960s she would probably have called love. For those children of the 60s to whom the full-on counter-culture seemed daunting, Baez provided an accessible model of rebellion - concerned citizenship without the face paint.
Eva Cassidy
By the time the pure, powerful voice of Eva Cassidy hit the airwaves, she had already passed away at the far-too-young age of 33. Early on she drew the attention of the "Godfather of Go-Go," Chuck Brown, who invited her to collaborate with his band, the Soul Searchers. Soon after, Cassidy was diagnosed with melanoma. After treatment, she recorded several collections of pop, blues, and jazz tunes, but the cancer was to return after only two years. Cassidy made one more public appearance in 1996, performing "What a Wonderful World," a rendition that still takes one's breath away.

Pop in the middle 50s

HISTORY OF POP

Modern pop began with rock 'n roll in the middle 50s. Basically, it was a mixture of two traditions -Negroe rythm 'n' blues and white romantic crooning, coloured heat and white sentiment.
Powerful Intentions - Forums - POP Music (Who sowed the Rock 'n' Roll Seeds?)
The new part about pop was its noise which came from it's beat. The beat was bigger and louder than any before it, because it was amplified. Mostly pop boiled down to Electric Guitars. These were nothing new in themselves - they had been around for years in jazz and had been featured on some white hits, but they had never been used as bedrock, as the basis of a whole music.

Most dance eras last a few years, a decade at most, but the war froze everything as it was, gave the big bands a second life and, by the early 50s, the scene had come to a standstill.

At this time, the music industry was controlled by middle- aged businessmen, uninterested in change of any kind. Mostly, showbiz, survived on habit.

There was no such thing as teenage music. The singers were generally well into their thirties by the time they made it. Basically, teenagers had to put up with the same songs that their parents liked.

Buddy Holly

Everyone knows about the plane crash that killed Buddy
Holly, The Big Bopper, Ritchie Valens and pilot Roger
Peterson on the 3rd of Feburary 1959. This was "The Day The
Music Died".

The title of the song "American Pie", supposedly came from
the illfated plane they were in, a Beechcraft Bonanza ,
nicknamed, "Miss American Pie", is this true ??.

Rolling Stones

All about the Rolling Stones
To begin with, in the early 60s the Rolling Stones used to play very violen in the line of Rythm 'n Blues. They were enthusiasts and cared a lot about their music.
