The Problem with Popping Pimples

Ranked #111,409 in Healthy Living, #1,092,898 overall

Best Thing You Can Do

Everybody who has ever had acne knows how extremely annoying it is. The bumps are unsightly, painful, and downright irritating. Popping pimples is very tempting, especially when they turn into whiteheads, but it really needs to be avoided.

When you mess with acne, all it accomplishes is spreading the bacteria that caused the blemish in the first place. If you are popping pimples, it could take a small problem, and turn it into a large one very quickly. To avoid this, the best thing you can do is to not touch them.

Biggest Problems

One of the biggest problems is that when you use your fingertips to squeeze the contents of a pimple out, it can actually force some of the infection further into the skin. This will make the bump last longer. Also, you can cause a lot of damage to the skin underneath the bump, which is what can cause lifelong scarring.

Another thing that people don't seem to think about is what is lurking under their nails. You would probably be mortified to know what sorts of germs and bacteria were hiding there at any given moment. The last place you want this stuff to end up is on your face. This can quickly make matters much worse too.

Do It Properly

If you pick at a bump and open it up, the bacterium from it is getting on your nails, and the germs from your nails are getting into it. Not only does this spread the pimple bacteria, it can also cause an even worse infection in the blemish, making scarring more likely. So as you can see, popping pimples is unsanitary in many ways.

If you have a huge bump that is full of white goo, you can take care of this, but you need to be very careful when you do it. Yes, there is a proper way to go about popping pimples, and if you are going to do this, you need to do it properly.

First Thing You Do

The very first thing you do is wash your hands. Then you take a sterilized needle and gently puncture the skin over the white head. You can then wipe away what comes out. Remember not to squeeze at it! When you are finished, promptly wash your hands and sterilize the needle again to avoid spreading the bacteria.

This can help these pimples to go away faster, but this should not be attempted with other types of blemishes. Even this method can just cause more problems and cause other types to stick around longer.

Last Resort

While you can get rid of the really bad bumps that turn into white monstrosities, popping pimples should generally be avoided. Only do this as a last resort, and only with sterilized hands and needle.
