Oh you have indeed brought back some wonderful memories of poppy seed rolls, bread, cake, and wheat soup. I can almost feel the poppy seed as at snaps when bitten. It is the delightful texture of poppy seeds that made them so delicious in cake, rolls, and bread. With Russian - Ukrainian my mom baked with poppy seeds a lot.

When we lived in Ottawa, we used to get poppy seed roll and I miss it. I don't know if I can find poppy seed here in Hanoi. I will try to make it if I find these.

Although I'm not entirely sure that poppy seed strudels originated in Hungary, I will admit that Hungarian cuisine is FANTASTIC! I've been to Hungary several times myself and the food *never* disappoints. BTW, I love your food lenses, the recipes are all great.

I used to help my mother makes these (well... our Polish version, which looks pretty much the same to me) when I was a child. We used poppy seeds we'd grown ourselves. Had no idea that type of poppy was illegal to grow!

Finding this lens is a major treasure for me! I love poppy seed roll and haven't had it since I was a little girl and my grandfather used to get it for me at the Hungarian bakery in Pittsburgh when I would visit. I'm so glad your recipe doesn't include raisins. Sometimes he would get poppy seed roll with raisins and I would pull out the raisins. :) I'm going to make it for sure and will report back!

You've given a great description of baking with poppy seeds. I am half Hungarian but did not grow up with exposure to traditional foods. In fact, I did not even know that poppy seed baked goods were a traditional Hungarian food, and yet I always liked them whenever I had them. When I finally visited Hungary I was delighted to know that these are part of my heritage. "Makos" the word for poppy filling is one of the few Hungarian words I learned and remember!

I'm from northeaster Ohio too! Akron, to be more precise. I LOVE poppyseed rolls, and even though I've made my own in the past, when I'm pressed for time, we would often buy them around the holidays when our local Acme stores baked them. My father passed down my love for the poppy seed flavor, and my son is afflicted with it too! :-)
  • jimmyworldstar Jan 22, 2012 @ 1:15 pm | delete
Looks delicious! I love those sort of swirl rolls with filling like cream on the inside. I just eat poppy seeds on bagels really, haven't tried it in a roll!

I just loved poppy seed rolls. My mother and grandmother used to make them ... looked just like yours but they called them mohnkuchen. When I google mohnkuchen it looks totally different, so maybe they made a modified version that was rolled. On occasion they would put plump raisins in the poppy mix as well. My mother and grandmother also never wrote their recipe down. It was really, really delicious! Great lens!

I was craving poppy seed and walnut rolls! It's New Years Eve day and I'm thinking about what to bring to a friends party. I am 1st generation Hungarian and lost my Mother last year. She never had a recipe book, it was all in her head. I procrastinated for years about writing everything down, lest I forget. Well. that didn't happen and I lost my Dear Mum last year. I thought, I'll google it, what have I got to lose? Thankyou for bringing a sweet tear to my eye, and for the recipe!! Marika

I grew up in Connecticut, in a neighborhood with many immigrant families from pretty much everywhere. I loved going to my friend Donna's house, because her father was Polish, and her mother was Hungarian.... between the two, some of the most awesome food came out of that kitchen! My absolute FAVORITE, though was beigli, which, until this morning, I did NOT know the name of. For 50 years I had been remembering this wonderful pastry.... looking for and describing it every time I was in a bakery... "I think its served around the holidays... its either Hungarian or Polish... it is a roll made with either poppy seeds or walnuts..." For whatever reason, this morning, I went to Google, typed in "Hungarian poppy seed roll". I think I screamed! There it was! I knew by reading the ingredients for the 2 fillings, and looking at the pictures, I FINALLY found it! Well, I made my 1st beigli this evening, and I am in Heaven! It is so amazing to remember something so fondly from childhood, and find it again, 50 years later. The recipe tastes exactly like the beigli I first tried in Mrs Telep's kitchen, 51 years ago. Thank you SO much! I am thrilled! Now, if your stuffed cabbage recipe can match hers, (tomorrow night's dinner, I think, lol) you truly have a devoted fan. Maybe one more slice...... :)
  • best_intentions Jan 16, 2011 @ 4:33 pm | delete
Yum!!!! Where I live there is a shop called Kramarczuk's that bakes this... every single time I drive by there, I have to resist the urge to pop in for beigli. I've never tried making this, but you have inspired me! mmm.mmm.mm.mmmmm.mmm

If any one has the receipe will they share it with me??? Thank you, married to a Russian/Check whose family made this.

My family is Slovak; I grew up on this stuff. Loved it. My grandma would make several loaves of it every week and it was always around as a staple snack when company visited. She made usually with poppyseed but also walnut and occasionally prune. I managed to get her recipe, but the issue I run into constantly is that the sides burst when I bake them. I dont have a convection oven (but then again neither did grandma!)... what am I doing wrong?

I live in Memphis., TN but just came back from Chicago, IL. My uncle used to bring a poppyseed cake with him everytime he visited us. So while I was there, I bought a cake to bring back to Memphis. I found it at Tel Aviv Bakery on Devon. Mmmm!! It is good. Brings back memories of when my uncle brought it. It tastes the same too.

We always had poppyseed bread (roll) at Christmas and Easter. Kifli was one of my Aunt Julia's specialties along with rosettes. I have a recipe similar to yours, and make it often. How I miss those simpler days in my Grandmom's kitchen watching her bake. One of the Hungarian bakeries in our neighborhood made delicious popppyseed danish with a melt in your mouth crumb topping, anyone have a recipe for the buttery crumb topping?
  • lilkon Apr 27, 2009 @ 1:44 pm | delete
As I remember, sour cream was an ingrediant in making the dough which was left to stand for some time to blend. Thinking about the walnut puree, and probably the poppy seed filling, there was no water but milk bubbling in the pot with both. Mom always leaned on the "rich" side when cooking or baking. Said it tasted so much better. We didn't worry about gaining weight then.
