Growing Poppies From Around The World

Ranked #791 in Home & Garden, #13,295 overall

You can grow poppies from all around the world

Beautiful poppies grow all around the world. Fragile looking and ethereal, poppies grow in wild places from the deserts of South Africa to the cool foothills of Nepal. There is even a poppy that grows in the snowy wastes of the Arctic circle, close to the North Pole.

Despite their delicate appearance, many wonderful poppies can be easily grown from seed. If you choose poppies that like the growing conditions in your garden, they will flourish with little attention or care.

Poppy flower time in my garden is an annual event that I look forward to; my anticipation growing with the gradual swelling of the flower buds. The day the first poppy opens always marks, for me, the beginning of Summer.

Take a trip around the world with me and find Poppies that grow from Bolivia to Kaffeklubben Island in the Arctic circle. Learn more about poppies, discover which poppies to grow, which poppy seed to buy, and how to grow poppies here, in this tribute to the beautiful, etheral and universal poppy flower.

All these flowers have been classified as poppies.

And all these Poppies belong to the Papaveracea family

Before looking at individual poppies or buying poppy seed, just take a look at the diversity of form within the Poppy family...it will surprise you.

Poppies are very photogenic, so along with the plant descriptions that follow, you will find some stunning images by some amazing photographers, kindly gifted via creative commons licence.

If you are beguiled by a particular poppy and decide to try growing it, do remember that it is important to know what conditions a particular poppy likes to grow in.

Some poppies like it hot and dry, some like it cool and moist.

Some poppies are annual; they grow in one season from seed, flower, set seed and die. If conditions are right their seed will populate your garden the following year, or you can collect the seed to sow else where or share with friends.

Other poppies are perennial. These take a couple of years to flower from seed, and then form deep fleshy rootstocks that produce new leaves and flowers every year.

These are all different kinds of poppies...

This look at poppies starts with the European field poppy

This is the European field Poppy: Papaver rhoeas; a wild flower of Europe, and considered a weed of arable land. It seeds itself in poor, dry soil, and grows in corn fields and waste lands.

The European field poppy

Papaver rhoeas: an annual

Farmers considered the field or corn poppy a weed to be eradicated during the second half of the 20th century, with the result that it became less and less common, and the sight of a corn field blazing with red poppies became rare. More enlightened thinking and less use of broad spectrum weedkillers has led to the re-emergence of this native plant, and it can now once more be seen gracing summer fields and roadsides.

This poppy is also known as the Flanders Poppy in remembrance of all who died on the battlefields of France in the last two world wars, because it was on the wastelands created by the destruction of war that the earth flowered brilliantly with red corn poppies.

This annual poppy has seed that has an incredible longevity, and can germinate many years after lying dormant in the soil, when brought to the surface.

Growing Papaver rhoeas

The annual field or corn poppy

Papaver rhoeas is an annual poppy. That means that it germinates from a seed, flowers, sets seed and dies in one year. If an annual is happy where it is, then you won't need to ever sow the seed again...the plant will do it for you year after year.

The seed of Papaver rhoeas is really tiny, and will germinate only when in the very top layer of soil. If your soil has deep cracks, the seed will be buried too deeply for it to succeed.

This poppy thrives in poor, unfertilised, well drained soil, even gravel and stony ground will support it. Just scatter the seed where you want the poppies to grow on a fine day when the soil is warm, and brush over the surface lightly with a broom to lightly work the seed into the ground.

Don't try to transplant seedling or grow them in pots for later planting...this poppy, like most poppies hates its roots being disturbed, and will generally not survive the process.

The annual field or corn poppy looks wonderful when sown in patches along paths. It's best to sow these seeds in an informal fashion and let nature take them where she will.

Poppy Fairy Wings: annual

Much effort has gone into breeding different strains of annual poppies. There are many varieties to choose from in subtle shades and colour combinations. These Fairy Wings poppies are amongst the most ethereally beautiful of all the annual poppies.Their cultivation is exactly the same as for the Common field or corn poppy.

Shirley Poppy: annual

There is a lovely history attached to Shirley poppies: in 1880 in the parish of Shirley in England, the Reverend William Wilks found a group of unusual field poppies growing in his garden next to some arable fields.

These poppies had a white border around the petals and were of a slightly different shade from the common poppies in the fields next door. He collected the seed and made it his mission to breed a new strain by hybridization.

Eventually a strain of poppies emerged that bore flowers in a range of colours fromred to white, and all the pastel shades of pink and mauve between. They had no dark blotches and often featured white or pastel banding to the edges of the petals. Double, semi-double and picote forms have since been developed.

Grow these just as you would any other annual poppy seed.

The Opium Poppy

Papaver somniferum: an annual

The Opium Poppy is another annual poppy. Its seed is slightly larger than that of Papaver rhoeas, but still small and a little goes a long way. Sow and grow as for all annual poppies. ( see Papaver rhoeas/ field poppy).

Opium poppy pops up as an univited but welcome visitor to my garden. It always suprises me how the seedlings spring up in unexpected places. Each year they self seed and flower in a range of colours from pale pink to dark mauve.

The seed heads make the most wonderful dried flower decorations for the house in winter.

The opium poppy is an important crop plant. It is the source of opium and culinary poppy seed and poppy seed oil.

Papaver somniferum is cultivated legally in Turkey, India, Australia and England for the pharmaceutical industry, and illegally in Afghanistan to supply the illegal opium trade.

The alkaloids in the opium poppy provide drugs including Coedine and Morphine. Morphine currently provides the most effective method of severe pain relief available to our world.

There is fierce debate as to the actual amount of morphine needed throughout the world, but the World Health Organisation states that there is a shortage, and as such advocates licensing its wider legal cultivation.

One project under consideration is the inclusion of the Afghan poppy farmers to the world production programme, in order to re-route their produce and provide them with a sustainable and legal income.

Opium poppies growing in gardens are not considered to be illegal in the west, and can be grown as a crop in England, although extraction of opium is prohiited. One country where it would be a really bad idea to grow papaver somniferum is The United Arab Emirates, where it is illegal to even own poppy seed; there are reports that a man was imprisoned for removing and keeping poppy seeds from a bread roll.

Opium poppies come in an astonishing range of colours and forms...

All opium poppy flowers are tall, strong and elegant, don't need staking, and once established in your garden, will self seed happily. They don't seem fussy to me, except that they don't seem to like being moved or transplanted.

These are some of the more exotic looking cultivated varieties of Opium Poppy. They are not difficult to grow, and they do interbreed, which leads to some fascinatiing new varieties springing up in your garden.

Within the Papaveracea family there are certain poppies that are called by different names: One of these is the the Californian Poppy or Escholzia californica. It is an annual plant flourishing in arable land very much like Papaver rhoeas.

In certain states this poppy is considered to be an invasive weed, but in California it is honoured each April 6th on California Poppy Day.

It grows and self seeds in poor, dry soils and revels in hot sunshine and like the corn poppy, Papaver rhoeas, it germinates in disturbed soil and often recolonizes after fires.

The Oriental Poppy

Papaver orientalis: perennial

Oriental poppies grow naturally in Turkey, Iran and the Caucasus, and are herbaceous perennials. This means that they grow year after year from a permanent set of roots. Most perennials produce leaves during the growing season, bloom, set seed and then die down, ready to repeat the process the following year.

Some perennials flower only once, some for a short period, some twice in a year and some for a long period. Oriental poppies only flower for a short period at the beginning of Summer and then die down in a rather untidy mess so it's best not to grow them at the front of borders. Plant so that other plants can grow up later in front and cover the gap.

Growing Oriental Poppies from seed

Cerise oriental poppy

The main way that Oriental poppies are propagated is by taking small sections of root in the Autumn, and laying these in pots of compost. In fact, if you dig a perennial poppy up, chances are you will leave a bit of root in the soil that sooner or later will sprout again.

Growing Oriental poppies from seed is not as easy as growing the annual poppy types, but if you don't have access to the plants for root cuttings I think it well worth the intitial bother.

It's best to sow these seeds in a tray of compost and keep warm and moist. As with all poppies, the seed is very small and must only be sown on the surface, but keep the light from the seed by laying a sheet of newspapaer over the compost once you have spread the seed.

The seedlings should germinate within a couple of weeks if it's warm enough, but give them longer before you give up; I've known a seed tray to suddenly sprout months after I had discarded it, and relegated it to the space behind my greenhouse.

Sow the seed thinly because you are going to have to prick out the seedlings into bigger pots once the seedlings have reached a reasonable size. When handling the seedlings, hold by the leaf and not the stem to avaid damaging the plant's vascular system, and don't damage the roots or the seedling will die.

Once you have a plant that has a well established root system, which will probably take one growing season, plant out in autumn whilst the soil is still warm, or in spring after the heavy frosts are over. Choose a place that is well drained with nutrient rich soil, in full sun or partial shade.

Once established, oriental poppies are easy to look after, needing little attention except a tidy up after they have died down in mid summer.

Mecanopsis: Poppies by another name...

Within the Papaveracea family there are certain poppies that are called by different names: One of these is the Welsh poppy; Mecanopsis cambrica.

It is a perennial plant that increases in bulk over several years of growth, and sets seed with wild abandon. A real toughie this; I have come across sole plants growing in the cracks of pavements, and sporting flowers in all shades from yellow to orange, and even the odd sport with pale edges to its petals, and one oddity with many petals and a frilly appearance.

As it grows in poor soil in sun and shade, the best way to grow this poppy is to sow the seed as for Papaver rhoeas or Papaver californica by broadcasting on fine crumbed soil and leaving it to do it's thing.

The Welsh Poppy or Meconopsis cambrica grows like a weed in my garden. It can be yellow or orange, and sets seed freely. As it grows naturally in rocky places, it is very drought tolerant, and will obligingly flower where little else will.

The Blue Poppy

The blue poppy is the national flower of Bhutan, and was discovered during a failed attempt at the sumit of Everest In 1922. The Meconopsis Group have a specialized website about Meconopsis species, and provide a complete review of the whole group of blue poppies and with stunning photos.

Blue poppies thrive best where it is cool and moist, so in order to grow them successfully, it helps to live in the cooler parts of theworld such as the British Isles, Scandinavia, British Columbia and the milder parts of Alaska

Blue poppy seeds

These are a more challenging seed to grow. Mecanopsis seeds are best sown during the cold months and allowed to germinate in an airy and sheltered environment.

Sow the seed onto the surface of the compost with the lightest dusting of compost to cover. A light and porous compost is necessary, and the best way to achieve this is to add a little grit or perlite to any proprietory compost.

It's important to not let the compost dry out, so your trays or pots will need watering using a fine spray in order to not disturb the seeds.

Keep your seeds in a green house, a cold frame or in a sheltered spot and await germination, which can mean anything from a couple of weeks to a year or more...you need to be patient with this group of poppies!

The seedlings can be pricked out once they have grown three proper leaves, and handle as described for oriental poppies.

For a more detailed look at the issues involved in raising blue poppies from seed meconopsis.org is an authoritative resource site authored by the international Mecanopsis study group.

Iceland poppies make wonderful cut flowers. To help them last, cut the flower just before the bud opens and sear the stem-end to prevent the latexy sap from running out.
