I grow Californian poppies. They come back on their own every year. I have some seed heads for other kinds of poppies, and I can't wait for the right time of year to plant them!

I obviously need to find some "Shirley" poppies. Actually I have visited the village of Shirley in Kent. I wonder if that is where the poppies are from that you mentioned above??

Poppies have always been among my favorite flowers, and I have been enthralled with the California poppy since I first saw a field of them as a young girl. What a beautiful, beautiful page. Thank you.

Such a beautiful page about poppies. I love poppies since I read the poem "In Flanders Fields" by a Canadian soldier. Poppies grow in france too, we see them in fields all the time. the look to be the wild kind, since they are in the middle of nowhere
  • aj2008 Apr 3, 2012 @ 6:40 am | delete
I have various poppies in my garden that self seed each year. You never know where they are going to pop up next, it could be in a pot with another plant or the garden itself. But I always leave them where they are because I love their hardiness and the way they keep regenerating.

My Dad passed away on Remembrance Day and his grandchildren know him as "Pop" - which makes the Poppy even more significant for me.

This is a beautiful page :)

What a fabulous collection you've put together. I love to photograph these close-up, but don't see so many of the field poppies now, as farmers use chemicals on their crops to keep 'weeds' at bay.

Tall Poppies are people who others think have got to big for their boots, who blow their own horn too much. Aussies then feel they need to be taken down a peg or two. On the other hand they don't like to see others 'down on their luck' and are quick to give a 'hand up'. Must be hard finding the balance in Australia :0 thanks for the link
  • OutbackJack Jan 19, 2012 @ 8:13 am | delete
I love poppies. We use the flanders poppy for rememberance day in November. I have opium poppies popping up everywhere too and we also have a wild small red poppy in Australia. There is an expression in Australia called "Tall Poppy syndrome" have you heard of it? On my lens for growing veggies you will find at the bottom a photo of a fly in a pink opium poppy. Just Loved this lens. Thanks for the help on Australia day too.
