The Poppy Series.

Developed from sketches & photographs taken of the poppies in my garden, this series of images takes as a starting point the idea that the individual is as important as the whole.

We are used to seeing fields of poppies, the beauty being in the mass of vibrant colour.  What this series aims to explore is the beauty of the singular.

Each of these images portray a poppy in isolation & in most cases doesn't show the standard view, but rather forces the audience to look at the flower from a different angle or perspective, examining it's uniqueness

Each piece has been hand drawn & painted in a number of styles & using various methods of mark making.  A selection have been uploaded into a computer based graphic package and are then individually manipulated to achieve new effects designed to explore not only colour, but form & texture.

I hope you enjoy them and I would love hear what you think.

Simple Line

This is a basic scan of a simple line drawing of a poppy. The scanner decided to add the colour flares - I liked it, I hope you do to.

New Cafe Press Store

Not just artwork, but loads of fun slogans too!

New images being added regularly.

Splobby...

Another wet on wet spray ink background, with a simple line drawing. With the help of our best friend the 'puter, the splobby background colour can be easily tweaked.

Wet on Wet

This image was painted whilst the paper was wet, hence a lot of bleed. Original colouring, nothing done to it.

Wet on Wet 2

The basic Wet on Wet image, trimmed and the colours changed with the help of our handy PC!

Stained Glass Blue

Reminds me of stained glass.

Single Blue

A single part open head was used as as a starting point.

Alone

This image seemed to ask for something more. As well as amending colours text was added - Alone. The isolation of the single head was obvious.

Defiant

I took another look at Single Blue - a different day, a new frame of mind. From Alone, isolated, it now became Defiant in it's isolation.

Growing Your Inspiration

It is so rewarding to not only create your own artwork, but to grow the plants from which you gain your inspiration. Gardening is just another way to create - colour, form, texture, all are waiting in the plant world.

Charity Fundraising

Have a laugh & do some good!

We opened this store a couple of years ago to support our charity fundraising in partnership with the Stargate fandom. I hope to be in a position to open a store for my artwork at a later date, until then, please have a looksee at the store as there is a much wider range there than I can show here. Thanks!

Another image, different handling, a bit of fun.

Golden Metallic Poppy

Colours were tweaked to make this version more fiery.

Metallic Poppy

The lower res picture doesn't show the true colours of this piece. Drawn in inks, with pencil & crayon, this has a very loose, liquid handling of the media.

Give Yourself a Visual Voice

You don't have to be an expert to enjoy creating works of art. Mark making, playing with colour & just expressing yourself is more important than exhibiting or selling your work. That can always come later, but first, have fun!

Original 'Head'

This is the original artwork for Head & Shoulders. I took a photo of the piece & then cropped it - nothing else.

Purple Head

Following on from Original Head, this is what happens when you change the colourway. None of the pieces have the actual image reworked, the lines/texture etc are the same, all I'm changing is the hue/saturation/colour/brightness, all things the computer is great for :)

Head & Shoulders 2

The original piece was run through the 'puter to create a striking pair of companion pieces - Black on white & this one, white on black.

Head & Shoulders 2

The aforementioned White on Black!

Head & Shoulders

Side view in pastel & ink.

Caught in the Rain.

Side view in inks.

Crystal Poppy

A mixed media image of a single poppy head, side view.

Take Me or Leave Me

A single poppy head, almost fully open. A nod to Pop Art.

Singin' In the Rain

Similar view to Head & Shoulders, but with a different handling. A very liquid view, almost water stains on silk.

Crack Field

A repeating image utilising a single side view image.
The computer come into it's own with this image.
