ADIRONDACK CHAIRS: WHAT ARE THEY?

Wouldn't you like an outdoor chair that is strong, comfortable, attractive, that won't blow over in the wind, and has wide armrests for your drink or snack? Meet the Adirondack Chair.

This style of chair has been around for over 100 years. It was created in Westport, NY, a small town on the edge of Lake Champlain in the Adirondack Mountains. In 1903, Thomas Lee set out to make some patio furniture for his large family. His chair design was made out of a long plank. Harry Bunnell, a local carpenter, built many chairs based on Lee's design, and in 1905 got a patent for the new chair which he called the WESTPORT CHAIR. It became locally popular, and was soon referred to as the Adirondack Chair, after that region of New York. After about twenty years, its use spread throughout the country and the world.

Today Adirondack Chairs are instantly recognizeable. Some are made out of wood, and usually painted either white or dark green. Others are sometimes painted in all the colors of the rainbow. Many are now made out of synthetic materials such as resin or recycled plastic, and come in a variety of colors. It takes about 50 plastic milk bottles to make one chair. There are child size Adirondack Chairs. There are Adirondack Rocking Chairs, and Adirondack Benches, and double tete de tete Adirondack Chairs, and folding Adirondack Chairs, and reclining Adirondack Chairs. In addition, there are Adirondack accessories such as an attached footrest, and matching tables.

This classic style looks perfect on the deck, around a firepit, by the lake shore, or on the beach. Forget those wobbley plastic stackable patio chairs and get the real thing, a sturdy Adirondack chair.

Why I Love Adirondack Chairs

type=textI first sat in an Adirondack Chair when I was about six at my grandmother's house in the N.H. White Mountains. I fondly recall sitting there listening to the crows cawing, and the wind whispering in the surrounding pine trees. Those two chairs are still in use 60 years later. Here is a recent picture of one of them in the yard in front of a glacial erratic at that same NH house.

As an adult, I proudly owned two white wooden Adirondack Chairs, and placed them on a high spot on our property along a N.H. tidal river. We spent many hours sitting there, watching the boats or seabirds go by. It was nice not to have to worry about leaving them out in the weather, or about them blowing into the river. They were hardy and heavy and untippable.

Today I go to many Florida art shows. There are always at least several pictures there featuring Adirondack Chairs on a beach at sunset, or in a flower garden, or on a hill overlooking a harbor. Adirondack Chairs have become an American icon-versatile and instantly recognizeable.

Adirondack Chairs are also an international favorite. In Hopetown in the Abacos in the Bahamas, there are even two Adirondack Chairs on the shore there that are used as part of a line-of-sight to guide you to the entrance of the Hopetown Harbor.

Classic Adirondack Chairs

Oxford Garden Shorea Adirondack Chair

These chairs have the weight that Adirondack Chairs SHOULD have! They are very heavy - so I am sure they will not ever blow away. The wood has a wonderful grain and smooth finish...best to teak oil them and then they'll look like a million bucks for a LONG time. The construction is tight and sturdy with durable bolts.... the assembly is a bit of a pain in the neck (it always is) BUT you will have them for a life so well worth the effort considering the quality and great price. Good sitting and proportion. (review from Amazon)

I love Adirondack chairs. My husband built two of them that sit proudly on our front porch. When the weather is nice, we eat lunch out on the porch. The big armrests hold our drinks. They are wonderful. Another bonus, as you mentioned, is that NOTHING can tip them or blow them over. We get high winds on the top of the hill where we are situated. The chairs just laugh at the wind. : )

In Vermont, we lived right across the lake from Westport. It is the tradition in Vermont to paint the chairs bright colors. Basin Harbor Resort, on the shores of Lake Champlain has a lovely collection overlooking the lake. Blue, red, green and yellow. The bright colors make you smile.

Congrats to your husband for building the chairs. I'm glad you are enjoying them. I looked up the Basin Harbor Resort. They have colorful Adirondack chairs all over the place. Wow!

We used Adirondack chairs on the front lawn when I was a kid, so I have many pleasant memories of sitting there lost in my thoughts, at least, until one of the grownups needed a chair, and then my reverie was interrupted. Lots of information in this lens about a great, comfortable outdoor chair.
