Why Popular Fad Diets Fail for Weight Loss and Health

I thought it was important to illustrate why popular fad diets fail. While there are many sound balanced diets out there that can work, many diets simply cannot create sustained weight loss. All they are is a gimmick to get you to pull out your money and give it to them. Here are some of the main reasons why these fad diets are doomed to make you fail and should help you identify if a diet fits this sort of "fad diet" category.

Why Popular Fad Diets Fail

It's Temporary

There are many diets that are very restrictive and severely limit all foods except for one specific to that diet, for example a soup or a type of fruit. These diets can be so restrictive and unhealthy that it is impossible for you to do these for the rest of your life. That means you have to go back to your old eating habits. These sort of popular fad diets don't take the time to teach you how to eat for life, only how to eat for a temporary period of time. If you are a fat guy, you're just going to go back to the "fat guy" way of eating and put it all back on.

It's Unbalanced

I've yet to see any of these fad diets resemble anything close to a balanced diet. Different types of foods provide different nutrients and vitamins. If a diet is not balanced between food groups then you're missing out on a lot of a vitamins and nutrients and this could lead to longer term health problems if you attempt to adopt it as a sustained diet.

It's Unhealthy

All these popular fad diets will claim they're extremely healthy, but I think anyone that takes a serious look at it can see that this is false. A lot of these diets put you into starvation mode, which is extremely unhealthy. A lot are so unbalanced that you should be able to figure out that they're not going to be healthy for you or anyone.

How to Pick An Effective Diet

If you want to know if a diet appears to be sound, some basic metrics to look at include:

1. It should be a balanced diet providing a balance between the major food groups and vitamins,

2. It should be based around consistent long term weight loss rather than a quick fix

3. It should include enough variety so you can see it as a realistic diet you may be able to enjoy keeping for years to come

4. It should provide a basic calorie deficit over the typical amount of calories you burn a day until the point that a health weight is reached.
