Porcupine Tree Rocks!
It is impossible to describe Porcupine Tree, except to say that their music is addictive. They can't really be categorized into a specifc genre. Some call them progressive, and some metal, and others rock. They are a little bit of everything. Each CD is unique and exciting, and complex, but always entertaining.
I discovered their music in 2003, when they toured with Opeth. I heard that they were fantastic, so I went to the show with an open mind. The performance blew me away and I ran to the merch table to buy up whatever they were selling. Since then I have been unable to get enough of their music. Porcupine Tree music takes up nearly half of the space on my iPod. Their songs find their way into all of my playlists and I make a point to see them whenever they come to town.
Fortunately, my entire family enjoys their music, and my 14 year old daughter went to her first Porcupine Tree show in 2005. While most of her friends call Green Day their favorite band, Sarah says her favorite is Porcupine Tree. I am so proud.
I love to hear from other Porcupine Tree fans and I welcome your comments and questions about this lens. This is just my little way to spread the word about the music I love.

The Essentials
Porcupine Tree has an impressive back catalog to choose from. These are some of the essential releases that provide an introduction to their music.
Arriving Somewhere
Finally! The brand new DVD release from Porcupine Tree. This was recorded in Chicago in 2005 and it is a fantastic show! I highly recommend this to anyone with even a mild interest in the band. This is a 2 DVD set, and the price is crazy low - cheaper than most CDs go for.
Deadwing
Deadwing is based on a screenplay of a ghost story by Steven Wilson. It's also the best selling Porcupine Tree album to date. The CD alternates between hard and heavy and softer melodies. Guests on this recording include Adrian Belew of King Crimson and Mikael Ã…kerfeldt of Opeth. The 12 minute epic, Arriving Somewhere But Not Here is the reason to buy this CD, but every track is brilliant.
In Absentia
This was my first Porcupine Tree CD and it served as a suitable introduction. In Absentia is heavy, and weird, and wild, and amazing. Everyone should have this CD in their library and listen daily.
Signify
This is the two disc re-release of Signify plus Insignificance. This is the version you want, and lately it's the same price as the single CD version. It's best enjoyed from start to finish as a wonderful musical journey. This is one of those CD's I'd want if I was trapped on a desert island.
Stupid Dream
This is the two-disc remastered version of this rare CD. I can't believe this is available here for less than a standard single disc CD. The second disc includes a rare video, photo gallery, and a 5.1 surround mix with special bonus tracks. This is a must buy release!
Great Source for Porcupine Tree Downloads
Amazon is offering Porcupine Tree via their new MP3 Downloads service. I am pleased with the service because the prices are great, the quality is superior to most other services and the music is offered without the DRM restrictions found in other MP3 download sites.Download Porcupine Tree MP3s

I just discovered PT about a month ago I now have Insurgents, FOBP, Nil Recurring, In Absentia, Deadwing, Stupid Dream and SW's Insurgencies' (spelling?). I am 43 years old and the feelings I am getting remind me of when I was 13 - 18 and listening to Rush 2112, PF Animals, DSOTM, The Wall, YES 90125, King C and Triumph among others. All happened in the late 70's early 80's. All my buddies were AC/DC, VanHalen, Def Leopard freaks don't get me wrong those bands were great party bands I just wanted more from music in my youth and sill do at my advanced age.
The Tree is great I can not figure out why they do not get much air time. Will somebody please enlighten me!! I called our local station here in Wichita Kansas and requested they play any PT single they had she said she knew of them just did get much of a call for them but she would see what she could do.
Does anybody think they are not being done right by the labels or is it they don't make very many 3 1/2 minute songs, if that is it that is a lame excuse if you ask me. I think the musical skill and talent that PT demonstrates far exceeds anybody that I have heard in quite with the exception of Rush (great musicians).
What is keeping this band from going BOOM and playing to 60,000 people a show. I just don't get it unless maybe I am completely naive and perhaps the music is too well done and too complex for the simple mind numb audience that seems to be out there that likes a lot of bass and distortion so to the artist (strike that) performers of the noise it hides their musical abilities if they have any.
I am soo tired of Simon telling me somebody has talent when that person can sing good no disputing that but they in my mind are not artist.
Its like somebody being able to paint a wonderful picture however it wasn't their idea the canvas already had the lines on it all they did was painted inside the lines using the colors that the canvas told them to.
Sorry for being soo cynical I just want PT to get more exposure because there music is far superior to anything that I know of out there right now.
Thanks
Cheez
