Building a New Cruise Terminal at Port Canaveral

On August 26, 2011, ground was broken for the new cruise terminal at Port Canaveral. Scheduled for completion in July of 2012, Port Canaveral's New Cruise Terminal is promised to be ready in time for the arrival of the Disney Fantasy, currently under construction.

The new faciity promises to be a great addition to our port and something special for those who plan a future cruise out of Port Canaveral. For those of us who live in the area, we hope it brings a much needed boost to our sorely suffering economy.

And, yes, work has begun! In this that I took in early October, you can see a construction crane behind and to the left of the pelican.

New Port Canaveral Cruise Terminal Location

Here's a view of the cruise ships at Port Canaveral, looking from approximately the SSW of the turning basin.
The ship on the extreme left, with the fishtail like funnel is moored at the Carnival terminal, and the one in the middle is at the Disney Cruise Line terminal. The new terminal is being built between the two.
(Because of the angle of this picture, it does not appear that there is much room between these two, but there really is!)

Early Photos of New Terminal Construction

type=textWith ground having been broken at the end of August, we didn't expect to see a full-blown anything already constructed when we visited to photograph the progress in October, but we did get some photos of the site, and evidence of construction equipment.

PHOTO 1(below) On October 4 - The construction site photographed from the overpass in front of the Carnival Terminal.

PHOTO 2 (below) On October 16 - A view from aboard Royal Caribbean's Freedom of the Seas, which was moored at Terminal 10. You can see where the ships will tie up at the new terminal, which is the area in betwee the two ships in the picture. The ships seen here are the bow of the Disney Dream on the left, and (if I remember correctly) the Carnival Sensation on the far right.

I hope that these two photos will be the first of many.

News about New Port Canaveral Cruise Terminal

type=Oasis-of-the-SeasHere are some things we have learned about the new cruise terminal:

We are told that the new terminal will be able to handle even ships as large as the Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas, which are currently the largest cruise ships in the world.

Scheduled completion date: July, 2012

Cost: $60,000,000

Will provide the capability to process disembarking AND embarking pasengers simultaneously. (this is huge!)

The terminal plans include a two story atrium, and seating for 1,100 passengers

The $60 million budget includes $23 million for the pier, a $3 million gangway, and $7.5 million parking garage with shopping on the ground level, and a covered walkway to the terminal.

Where Is Port Canaveral?

type=Map-of-FloridaPort Canaveral is on the east coast of central Florida, almost due east of Orlando. The port is just to the south of the Kennedy Space Center, and provides a stunning view of KSC launches over the ship channel.

It's about a 47 minute ride from Orlando International Airport to the cruise port - a straight shot along State Road 528, also known as the "Beach Line.."

Nearby you'll find plenty of hotels, some of which provide park and cruise packages if you are driving.

I have been out of Port Everglades once, but driven through there and Miami numerous times. Not really into cruising, which is sad because we live in the city in the UK with the biggest cruise terminals as well. Nicely done, looking forward to your description of using the new terminal when it is completed.

I would love to go see Port Canaveral's new cruise terminal and watch to ship set sail. Oh, I would love to be on board too, but that may never happen. The campground at Jetty Park sounds more like my speed. :)

I don't think they should use the word 'terminal' when referring to modes of transportation =)
