Choosing a Portable DVD Player for Kids

type=textA portable DVD player for kids can be a great way of keeping kids entertained during long car rides. They can also provide controlled entertainment for the youngest children. Parents can keep young kids entertained with DVD's they approve versus TV content they haven't approved.

Some portable DVD players are designed for kids under 8 years of age. They should have a rugged build and be able to survive some bumps and knocks. They tend to be smaller, easy for preschoolers to carry around or small enough to fit in a backpack. They often have larger buttons and are easier to load. For instance, they generally don't have an exposed disk or require a child to open them to insert the disk. They may feature bright primary colors or characters/themes that attract young kids.

For older kids, a 7 or 9 inch portable DVD player might be more appropriate. Parents should consider a few other features. For instance:

  • The Screen

  • The tiny screens on portable DVD players for kids under 7 or 8 years of age are generally pretty small, but for older kids a 7" (or larger) screen might be appropriate. The resolution should be considered to assure a quality image.

  • Entertainment Features

  • For added entertainment value, some of these portable DVD players for kids may offer games and game controllers. They may also act as a picture viewer and as a music player.

  • Headphones

  • If you don't want to have to listen to what the kids are watching, having a headphone/earphone jack is important. Of course, if you want to be able to allow two kids to enjoy the same movie, two headphone/earphone jacks can be useful too.

  • Battery Life

  • Battery life can also be important, especially if the DVD player will be used on long car trips. Of course some portable DVD players may also add in a car adapter which can help resolve any related issues. Of course, if the player will be used primarily in the car, parents can also consider dual screen DVD players which often offer mounting options for putting the player securely on the headrest.

My grandson is 3 1/2 and he has been watching Barney, Elmo and other DVD's on his own dvd player for at least a year. Of course, they don't always last a long time, but Mom is real good about buying another one. Mom also set up a stand for his DVD player when they came up to Michigan from Texas. Watching the DVD's really help him spend time as he was sitting in his carseat in the backseat which Mom was driving. Very versatile for children.
