Kindle vs. iPad - Join the Portable eBook Reader Debate
Ranked #8,327 in Computers & Electronics, #163,807 overall
Which is Your Favorite Portable eBook Reader?
Kindle vs. iPad, for me the choice of a portable eBook reader was easy. But one could call me an Apple addict, or an Apple loyalist. Yes, it's true, I probably didn't give them a fair comparison before today, as I always love the newest Apple device. But, with an objective look, which one is actually better?
Is the Kindle the better portable ebook reader with its compact size, lighter weight and easy to access books and magazines and of course it's lower price. Or is it really my personal favorite portable ebook reader - Apple's iPad. The iPad is lager, but doesn't that in fact make it easier to handle - after all Amazon now has a larger version of the Kindle. Plus iPad is superior for pictures, videos and other internet activities.
Downsides, yes they both have them - the Kindle is difficult to use with internet outside of "kindle products" and the iPad is more expensive and a bit difficult for creating new documents.
But this isn't my debate, it is yours. Here is your chance to tell us which portable eBook reader you prefer. And you can tell us why if you choose. So join in the debate, see what others have to say, and then read on for a bit of specs and many more opinions on both of these devices. Let the battle begin . . .

Which is the Superior Portable eBook Reader - Kindle or iPad?

Kindle Rules!
corteeze says:
I'm fortunate to have both, and love them equally. The backlit iPad makes it great for reading at night, especially in bed when the spouse asks to turn the light off. The kindle is smaller, light-weight, and much better in daylight sun, and works a heck of a lot better if poolside or at the beach.
dfrye1 says:
If you are strictly purchasing your device for the purpose of reading eBooks, than there is no better choice than the Kindle. However, if you want to use your device for many different tasks and want to compromise and don't mind more eye strain and getting much more glare on the screen in many situations, then the iPad is the way to go.
However, I am not one for compromise. I own one of each and am happy with both. There are occasions I use my ipad to read Kindle books, but, I do the bulk of my reading on the Kindle. If I could only choose one, and I was only interested in reading, it would be the Kindle. Otherwise, the iPad wins because of its computer like abilities...

Sammie says:
I love my kindle, it's light, it's simple to use and it's non-backlit. The fact that it only does one thing (read books) was actually a selling point for me, nothing to distract me from the words on the page :-)
JoyfulPamela says:
I was recently given a Kindle for my birthday and I love it! But, I can't really compare it since I've never used an iPad.
bethd821 says:
I got a Kindle DX for Christmas last year and I love it. It is as slim as a pencil and fits into my purse easily. It's lightweight and holds 3500 books. I've started reading again and that's a good thing.
iPad Rules!
crazylame1 says:
iPad rules because it can read ebooks AND play games and have different apps.
JaEvans says:
I like both. As an author www.herorisingthebook.com I am just glad that there are devices that make it easier to share my work. If you want to read Kindle is great if you want a complete multimedia device ipad is better.

Betsi_Goutal says:
Ipad all the way! It runs the Kindle app so it's exactly the same as a Kindle but with tons and tons of other great applications. No question - iPad, hands-down.
chartman says:
iPad is superior because you can access ANY of the eBook reader apps (Kindle, Nook, eReader, iBook). I've been reading eBooks since my first Palm PDA, and I can still access the hundreds of books I downloaded from ereader.com on my iPad. I can share certain books (books that are designated as sharable) with Nook or iPad users I encounter (I think they get a two-week period to borrow a book from me). iPad is in color, not black and white (or gray and white). Most importantly, you can do SO MUCH MORE with the iPad -- in other words, it's not a device dedicated to one purpose. With a Kindle, ALL you've got is a reader. With an iPad, I have a computer. With the hundreds of thousands of apps, there's very little I can't do with an iPad!
Pukeko says:
The iPad is sleek and fun! Not only that it is versatile, useful and made by Apple. iPad Rules!
