Portable Warmth

Ranked #18,638 in Home & Garden, #268,986 overall

Electric fireplace heaters are becoming increasingly common design elements in modern homes, particularly in those homes that are unable to have (or, unable to afford) a chimney. Electric fireplaces are great ways to bring warmth to a home, but before you go out and buy one, assess the full advantages (and disadvantages) of owning such a portable fireplace, so you can make an informed decision.

Electric Fireplace Heaters: More and More Common?

Electric fireplace heaters are a common sight in most households, especially during winter period. These heaters keep the families warm amidst the cold nights. For those who can afford it, having a wooden fireplace is a better way to keep warm. Aside from the warmth it gives, it also provides good ambiance to the household. But if you cannot afford to get a fireplace, you can always get an electric fireplace.

Purchasing an electric fireplace has its own pros and cons. You can install an electric fireplace in your apartment; these units are very portable that you can just unplug them and bring them to another room or as mentioned, an apartment. Also, having a real wooden fireplace can be a possible fire safety issue compared to having an electric fireplace.

Benefits

You don't have to remodel your house to build a chimney for the wooden fireplace; you just have to plug in the electric fireplace and follow the instruction manual to operate it. Also you won't need to buy expensive fireplace mantels surrounds or wood fireplace surrounds as there is no need to have elaborate decorations for an electric fireplace. Electric fireplaces are also smoke free; meaning it is safer for the environment.

These units are can also be controlled remotely; you will be saved the hassle of trying to figure out how warm you want your fire to be. It is a lot easier to maintain than a wooden fireplace; you don't need to purchase wood or clean the chimney constantly; taking out the soot is a hard task.

Drawbacks

There are also a number of drawbacks when buying a electric fireplace. A real fireplace gives off a better feel or ambiance than having an essentially fake fireplace in your home.

Electric fireplaces are much more expensive than regular heaters. But the electric fireplace provides an added ambiance, albeit small, compared to a plain electric heater. Your house does not become more valuable just because of having an electric fireplace; it is not a permanent installation meaning it does not add any value whatsoever to your house's overall worth.

Having an electric fireplace to keep you warm on cold, winter nights is a cheap alternative if you don't have the real thing. It's cheaper because you don't need to buy wood fireplace surrounds or fireplace mantel surrounds and you don't have to remodel your house to install a chimney. One drawback though is that it won't add value to your home as it is not a permanent installation to your house.
