What is Flac?

FLAC stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec, an audio format similar to MP3, but lossless, meaning that audio is compressed in FLAC without any loss in quality. This is similar to how Zip works, except with FLAC you will get much better compression because it is designed specifically for audio, and you can play back compressed FLAC files in your favorite player (or your car or home stereo, see supported devices) just like you would an MP3 file. An mp3 is actually a downgrade from what cd quality would be. When an mp3 is created it shaves off the highs and lows from the audio file to make it smaller. Thus making a smaller file but at the same time quality is reduced. The Flac format is a lossless format, meaning the audio file is compressed without taking any of the music quality away. The music player's that we have featured offer both the popular mp3 format as well as the high quality Flac format. Click below to find out more!

Portable Flac Players

This is the place to help you decide which portable flac player is best for you. In the last couple of years there has been a lot of additions to the market, giving us options that were not available before. Check out our list of music players that play flac as well as mp3's. If you are looking for one with a large hard drive then you might want to check out the Archos 5 which comes with a 500GB hard drive and runs on the Android operating system. There are also some cheaper players that take SD cards that start at $29.99. There's no excuse to settle for mp3 quality. If anyone has any suggestions on other flac music players please leave me a comment with a link.

Hi-Fi Man HM-801 Portable Music Player

Check this bad boy out!

Hi-Fi Man
HM-801
Portable Music Player

If you crave true audiophile quality portable sound but your iPod or other mass market device just doesn't fill the bill, check out the HiFiMan. Sure, it's bigger and beefier than the garden-variety portable player, but the sound is that much bigger, too. Built into the HiFiMan is a Burr-Brown PCM1704U with 24-bit, 96 khz capability.

HM-601 Music Players

Hi-Fi Sound Quality NOS DAC TDA1543 Powerful Headphone Amplifier Circuit Support 24bit/96kHz FLAC and some other lossless formate Up to 32Gb SD memory (SDHC card support up to Class 4)

HM-601 Music Players

Benefitting from NOS DAC design, HM-601 is a warm, natural and musical sounding player. HM-601 has very similar sound to HM-602 because these two players share same D/A converter and headphone amplifier circuit. HM-601 has slightly better bass extension than HM-602, and a little less sweetness and smooth texture in mid and high (A lot of people might not be able to tell difference at all). As the simplified version of HM-602, HM-601 can not work as a soundcard, and using different op-amps. HM-601 has 2Gb memory, which is much smaller than HM-602's 16Gb memory. With the high / low Gain switch, HM-601 can drive both high efficiency IEM and most full size headphones.

Comments, Feedback and Suggestions

Lots of good products, FLAC rulez! Lots of good products, FLAC rulez! great lens... nice info :) Thanks for sharing nice lens! PRAY FOR JAPAN Please My mistake, your model does NOT (at this time) support FLAC. Most of Creative Zen's new models DO support FLAC though. Thanks for the response, we really appreciate the feedback. I have the Creative Zen X-Fi 16 GB Video MP3 Player. But mine doesn't play FLAC files. Do I need to do something to it? Is there software/firmware I need in order to play them? I have not heard of Flac players, but they sound like just what I need, thanks for the info.
