Portable Infrared Saunas

Portable infrared saunas allow you to enjoy the relaxation and health benefits of a far infrared heat in the comfort of your own home. Far infrared saunas are much easier to maintain and set up than a traditional steam saunas and arguable provide more health benefits because of the type of heat they produce.

I have done a ton of research on portable infrared saunas in my quest to find the perfect one for my home. In fact my sister has one built into her bathroom and absolutely loves the health benefits.

There is a lot to buying a portable infrared sauna including many different brands that have their unique take on what exactly quality is. Hopefully this article and the below infrared sauna comparisons will give you a better idea of what you are looking for and what considerations that you should take when you are purchasing a sauna. You will also be able to find the benefits of saunas and some of the facts about how the can improve your aches, pains and overall health.

Benefits of a Sauna

Promotes A Healthy Heart And Increased Breathing Function.
The benefits of a sauna also extend to the heart and airways. opening up your airways can be useful for treating minor colds and other breathing related illness. (according to GoAskAlice.columbia.edu.) Because of the increased circulation your blood pressure reduces because your heart does not have to work as hard to pump blood.

A portable infrared sauna used dry heat to raise your body temperature and encourage your body to sweat. When you enter the heat your body begins to immediately react to the benefits of a sauna inside and out. Your blood vessels enlarge and your circulation increases which helps to carry nutrients to your muscles and soft tissues. The heat helps to warm and loosen stiff muscles and joints and your body becomes more flexible and your range of motion increases.

Improves your Complexion
Because one of the benefits of a sauna is increased circulation, your skin benefits greatly. The increased blood flow to the skin brings more minerals and nutrients to your body's largest organ. This helps shed away old skin cells, promotes the growth of new skin cells and encourages collagen and elastin production. (according to Dr. Andrew Weil)

Detoxifies Your Body
Bathing in portable infrared saunas mimics your body's response to a fever which triggers your organs to flush out toxins. You body flushes out the toxins through sweat and research shows that it helps your body to release alcohol, nicotine, sodium, cholesterol and potentially carcinogenic heavy metals from your cells.

Infrared Sauna Comparisons

When your are looking to make infrared sauna comparisons there are two main types that most consumers consider. There are traditional steam saunas and there are portable infrared saunas.

The steam sauna started as a traditional Finnish idea where the sauna was a wooden structure that enclosed heated stones. The users of these early saunas would throw water on the hot stones and bathe in the steam. The traditional sauna has not changed much since its inception and still provides great health benefits. Many doctors maintain that steam saunas are very good for you in short durations. Steam saunas normally reach about 180 degrees give or take. The problem is that the human body can only take small doses of heat this extreme. The reason that steam saunas need to get so hot is because the heat actually penetrates the skin and muscles at only about 1/8 th of an inch.

The Portable infrared sauna derives its heat source from steam free heaters that produce wave length of heat that is similar to what the sun produces however does not contain UV radiation. Generally a portable infrared sauna does not have to produce as much heat to be effective and is much cheaper and less to maintain for home use. The infrared heat from an infrared sauna will penetrate the skin and muscles up to 2 inches compared to the 1/8th of an inch of steam saunas. Therefore the user is able to experience a deeper sweat at the 120 degree temperature of an infrared sauna then the 180 degrees of a steam sauna.

Types of Wood Found In Saunas

Types of Wood

Another piece of the Infrared Sauna comparisons are with the types of woods that are used for the construction.
There are a handful of different types of wood that portable infrared saunas are made of. Here is a list:

1. Red Cedar
2. Nordic white Spruce
3. Abachi
4. Aspen
5. Clear Vertical Grain Hemlock

When a sauna maker is looking at types of woods to make a sauna from they are looking at a few qualities. The first quality is that the wood will have a natural resistance to decay especially in a steam sauna. The second is that it is a soft wood that will not crack and split when it contracts and expands due to the heat. Lastly is the overall grain and pattern of the wood.

From all of the research that I have done Canadian Wester Red Ceder is arguably the best material to make a sauna out of while Hemlock is a close second. While looking at the woods that a portable infrared sauna is constructed from, the most important thing is that it is solid pieces of wood and not cheep wood covered with a cedar veneer.

Portable Infrared Sauna Brands

Health Mate Saunas
There are a few really reputable brands on the market. One of my top pics is Health Mate Saunas. There are few reasons that I like Health Mate.

First they have been in business for nearly 30 years making saunas and are the current industry leader. This not only tells me that they know what they are doing it also gives me comfort in knowing that their life time warranty really means something.

Secondly they make their saunas out of solid Canadian Western Red Cedar. They actually own a Ceadar milling company exclusively for their saunas. The have complete control over the quality of wood that is used. In fact they only use center cut boards to make their sauna panels.

Thirdly they have a patented M - Type far infrared heating system and finally is their dedication to the environment. Yes, they are a green company!

East Coast Saunas

The reason that I like East Coast Saunas so much is because of there renown constructions and the options that a they offer. East Coast Saunas have been in business for the last 10 years and offer a life time warranty with the products. They have 4 different sizes of portable infrared saunas and each one is available in either Hemlock or Red Cedar. They have loads of options including different lighting options, Stereo options,TV options, easy touch controls and many more.

All East Coast Saunas have their Carbon wave infrared heaters. These heaters are very cost effective and are capable of producing heat up to 150 degrees Fahrenheit. They use a carbon based heating element rather than a ceramic. This allows for a more evenly heated sauna, they are actually much more efficient and safer. You can actually lay against a carbon infrared heater and not get burned.
