Lose Weight - Control Food Portion Size with Meal Measure

Portion control and portion control dishes or dinnerware are helpful whether you are a diabetic, want to lose weight, or weight management is your concern.

What I like about the Meal Measure is the fact that you don't have to use measuring cups or scales any more to figure out just the right food portions for your meals.

All you need is your Meal Measure, which will fit in most standard sized dinner plates...just this one easy-to-use, easy-to-clean item, and you're all set! I share more about portion control dinnerware and dishes below.

Does Meal Measure Come With a Plate?

What size plates can be used with it?

No, the plate pictured does not come with the Meal Measure...but that isn't a problem, here's why.

You can use the Meal Measure with any standard sized dinner plate, which is what you want to do anyway. Why? Because you want your eating experience to be familiar, what you are used to....but with the right portions of food. By doing this you are only changing one habit...the quantity of food you are eating, all the rest is comfortably the same.

Also, when you are eating at the table with family, your plate will look like every other plate on the table, you will just have better control of your portions...unless of course you are sharing the Meal Measure with other family members and working on portion control as a team!

How to Use the Meal Measure for Portion Control

Even the new substitute for the food pyramid looks like a portioned plate

Choose My Plate

It's very easy. Each section of the Meal Measure is labeled. It almost reminds me of the new portioned plate image that replaces the food pyramid which was introduced in June 2011 by Michelle Obama and is pictured here. You will find a section for vegetables or fruit, for protein, and for starchy foods which are usually your carbohydrates...like potatoes, rice and pasta.

Each cavity equals 1 cup, and if your diet only calls for 1/2 a cup, no problem, there is a line marking 1/2 a cup inside each cavity.

Using it is as simple as can be, just put it on your plate, put the appropriate foods into the appropriate sections, remove the Meal Measure, and spread the food out so it looks like your plate has more in it - this helps you mentally when you're eating for weight loss, believe me!

Now it's time to enjoy your meal...eat slowly and savor each bite.

Tip: Remember that certain foods are so extremely low in calories that you can fill the "emptiness" on your plate with them, this would include salad greens and other salad items like cucumbers, green peppers and tomatoes - any similar vegetable that does not contain a high carbohydrate content. Your Salad Dressing could be the problem here, I solve that by sprinkling with a little Balsamic Vinegar, or using no more than 2 T. of Fat Free salad dressing.

Diabetic Husband - Overweight Wife

Why Portion Control is Important to Us

To get just a little personal, my husband, who just happened to see a Meal Measure on Dr. Oz for the first time, is a diabetic. He has been for many years. Weight loss has been a constant battle for him, and if there isn't some way to control meal portions, or to be accountable, it is a losing battle. He needs to control the kinds of foods he eats as well...we have been through a few heart procedures that are real wake-up calls.

I am not extremely overweight, but struggle to keep an extra 20-30 lbs. of extra weight off.

We have tried more than a few weight loss programs, and they work for a time, but as soon as they are finished, they are finished...and the weight comes back on. In fact, it seems like each time it comes back on, there is more of it.

So this simple weight control tool seems like the perfect solution for us. I can cook just like I always do, and we can use the Meal Measure to portion our foods.

In time, I'm hoping that we will not have to keep track of our meals on paper, or on the computer, the tools we use to input every meal we eat each day and get a report on how we are doing. I am counting on the Meal Measure to make life a lot easier and eating a lot more enjoyable.

Having been a gestational diabetic I know how hard it is to keep blood sugar under control. I do want to share that if one is on insulin it can also cause weight gain as a side effect for some people. I was able to prevent from using insulin but did take metformin to control my blood sugar levels. Not all carbs are created equal... and everyones body is different when it comes to consuming them. Nice article here. Thank you for sharing this nice little portion control plate.

My problem is not portion control but self control, still I think it should help.
  • Lyn Jan 8, 2012 @ 4:26 pm | delete
I have a problem with this portion control. How can it be the same for a short vs. a tall person? How can it be the same for a man vs. a women? As other people pointed out soups, salads and casseroles do not work with the portion control item.
  • happynutritionist Jan 10, 2012 @ 2:50 pm | delete
It is a general guideline...if you find that you are losing to quickly or slowly, you adjust accordingly. Most of us who have weight issues left to our own without some portion control help gradually increase our portions, sometime without know it. Portion control dishes are like a "wake up call", make you realize how much more you are eating than you should. For soups and casseroles, there are things to help with that too, but once you start portioning the foods that you can with portion control dishes, your awareness will greatly increase, and you will naturally control the portions of things that cannot be measured in the dishes.

It would be great if some mothers that sort of force feed their children would have something to help them learn that a child doesn't need large portions of food put on their plates. I like this lens!

I am wondering how I would use this product with something like casseroles, stews, and soups??
  • happynutritionist Sep 6, 2011 @ 11:10 pm | delete
After you have used he meal measure for a period of time, you will have a good idea of how much of each food group you should be eating. You can then with a good eye and common sense determine if you are getting the right portions in the casserole or stew you are eating.
  • home-remedies Aug 31, 2011 @ 7:41 am | delete
That looks great, i have always struggled with portion control.
  • Pedro_Morales Aug 25, 2011 @ 7:37 am | delete
for Western, particularly Americans, the amount of food we put in our plates tend to be too much because our plates are huge and we think we have to fill them up. The oriental culture(Japan, China) is different. They place each element of their meals on a different small plate. Thus practically, their countries suffer much less incidents of obesity. This idea of Meal Measure is great, I hope it takes off.
  • straw-hut Jul 18, 2011 @ 4:28 pm | delete
This is fantastic. I've never seen one of these. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and notice when I control portion size my numbers go down.

More than anything else, I think portion control is the key to good health and weight loss in this country. Too bad restaurants won't serve realistic portions at realistic prices. If they did, people like me would give them a lot more business. Great lens!

This Meal Measure idea really is brilliant and so simple. The thought of actually measuring out food is rather unappetizing, but this makes it so easy. Great product!

What a brilliant idea! It is so easy to go overboard with portions, especially if you have no clue what they should be.
