My Favorite Lunch Spots in Portland, Maine
These aren't necessarily the fanciest places to eat lunch, but if you work in the Old Port, or if you're just visiting, this is where locals go to fuel up for the afternoon.
- Market Street Eats, 30 Market St., (207) 773-3135 - Insanely fresh food with a great staff that greets you (or at least me) by name. My fave: The Cayenta. Grilled chicken, melted cheddar, spicy southwestern sauce, tomato and onions.
- Granny's Burritos, 420 Fore St., (207) 761-0751 - I used to have these guys on speed dial, but we upgraded our phones and I haven't figured out how to do speed dial yet. My fave: Mango chicken burrito with mixed beans, mango salsa, spinach wrap and lite XXX sauce.
- Anthony's Italian Kitchen, 151 Middle St., (207) 774-8668 - Another place they always seem to know your name...plus they have dinner theater! How many lunch places can say that. My fave: large eggplant parmesan.
- Flatbread Co., 72 Commercial St., (207) 772-8777 - Great place for takeout or eat in. They've even got some outdoor seating where you can watch the Casco Bay Line ferry's go in and out. My fave: Punctuated Equilibrium, kalamata olives, fresh rosemary, red onions, oven roasted peppers, goat cheese, mozzarella, garlic, cheese & herbs.
- Sapporo, 230 Commercial St., (207) 772-1233 - Probably the best bento box in the city. Plus, one of the most unusual fish tanks. My fave: that bento.
- Whole Foods, 2 Somerset St., (207) 774-7711 - OK, it's not really a lunch place per se, but for $7.99/lb you can get some amazing lunch stuff from the food bars. My fave: the chicken with broccoli, or the potato latkes, or the fresh sushi, or...
