Portmeirion, a beautiful village in Wales

If you are a fan of the TV series The Prisioner you may recognize Portmeirion Village.
It's a magical village, in a beautiful natural setting, the vision of one man, built over 50 years.

I was lucky enough to visit Portmeirion a few years ago and it made a lasting impression on me, as it has on so many people.

Colorful, fanciful, full of imaginatin and surprises.  Beautifully balanced scenes from anywhere you stand.  Portmeirion is built in harmony with the landscape.

Portmeirion is the opposite of Las Vegas.  It's the cure for suburban pod home developments and giant swaths of freeways.

Portmeirion Photos

It's hard to capture the beauty and proportion of the village, but here are some photos.

Who Built Portmeirion?

Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, that's who. (1883-1978)

Sir Clough Williams-Ellis built Portmeirion from 1925 to 1975 on a peninsula off the coast of Snowdonia to show how 'the development of a naturally beautiful site need not lead to its defilement'.

He created a living example of his fascination with architecture and landscape design.

Part of the charm of Portmeirion is the wealth of architecture detail throughout the village. Periods and styles happily comingle.

Portmeirion is the antithesis of the suburban strip mall. It is a place that enriches the soul. Beauty "that strange necessity" in the words of Sir Clough Williams-Ellis abounds at Pormeirion.
