Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man
Ranked #5,210 in Books, Poetry & Writing, #191,628 overall
"A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" is a unique and semi-autobiographical novel by James Joyce!
A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce has an unusual format. It isn't really "train of thought" writing, though it seems close. Technically the style is called "free indirect speech". It is written in third-person so cannot be "train of thought" as that would simply report the point of view of the character experiencing events. This is demonstrated well in William Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury.
I'm a fan of the classics but had never read anything by James Joyce until I started reading A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. After becoming acquainted with Stephen Dedalus, the book's main character, the reader is ready for Joyce's most famous book, Ulysses ... which is extremely challenging, train of thought, and often considered the greatest novel ever written. Stephen Dedalus appears again in that book, so a reading of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man first is a good preparation for the longer journey.
James Joyce is, or was, an Irish writer.... dear to me as some of my ancestors came from County Cork in Ireland. (I'm a Californian.)

I remember Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man for the superb highlighting of the evils of religious extremism
Not as great as people think.

- New translations of Clarice Lispector novels reveal a full picture of greatness
- Inspiration struck the young Lispector, who was just 23 when her first book, "Near to the Wild Heart," was published in 1943. Its title was taken from James Joyce's "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man," an apt comparison.

- I hope the Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man can translate to audio. I wonder if stream of consciousness can be read aloud. Will the references to the political turbulence of the times, the religious underlay, the colours and the music make sense?. Best of luck with it.

- Stream of consciousness can be hard to follow! Last year I listened to The Sound and the Fury (Faulkner) and ... oh boy! Was I ever confused!!!! Yet by the time the novel finished I was glad I read it. I made a lens for that book too!
