Portsmouth FC, also known as Pompey, is a football club playing in the English Premier League. During a successful spell in the decade after World War II, they won the league twice and the FA Cup once. Portsmouth FC is one of only 5 English clubs to have won the league title in two consecutive seasons.
So far Portsmouth FC has not competed in any European competitions. They were offered a place in the 2007 UEFA Intertoto Cup, but declined in order to fulfill previously agreed commitments.
Portsmouth FC play their home games at Fratton Park, a 20,000 capacity all-seater stadium that has been the clubs home ground since it was founded in 1898. In spite of improvements being made to the ground over the years, it now shows signs of ageing, so from 2011 onwards Portsmouth FC plans to move to a new build 36,000 seater stadium, subject to planning permission being granted.
Portsmouth FC is owned by French/Russian businessman Alexandre Gaydamak, who took full control of the club in July 2006. A member of the wealthy Gaydamak family, he also hold an Israeli passport, and is a patron of a number of Jewish Charities.
The club is managed by Tony Adams, a former Arsenal FC defender, who was assistant manager to Harry Redknapp, before he left the club to manage Tottenham Hotspur. Tony Adams has had a tough start to his managerial career, seing the club drawn into the battle for survival in the Premier League.
Team Captain is Sol Campbell, a rock solid, and very experienced central defender who joined Portsmouth FC from Arsenal ahead of the 2006-2007 season.
