Picture Postcards for Collecting and Sharing News

I began my first postcard collection many suns ago as a ham radio operator. I collected postcards from all over the world, trading the cards with my morse code contacts, and displayed them proudly until moving along to a new hobby.

Recently, I've decided to begin collecting them again and have even created a few of my own via my shop, Poetic Creations by abitosunshine. So far, most of my picture postcards were created for a special purpose in mind, a message of one kind or another I wished to convey in a rhyme and/or design.

Now, I need to check with the post office to see if they have a real sunshine stamp or, better yet, an abitosunshine Zazzle stamp creation of my own! Wouldn't you just love to receive a bit o' sunshine in your mailbox?

I've always been, and still am, a letter writer. I so enjoy writing and receiving handwritten letters from loved ones. However, sometimes there's little new news to share and that's where postcards come in handy. Jot down a short message just to spread a bit o' sunshine into the day of another.

Picture postcards are also a wee bit cheaper to mail than a greeting card or full-length letter in an envelope. Especially in unsteady economic times this makes sending a post card a thrifty thing to do.

Education Empowers

Education - Postcards for a Purpose - Illiteracy

Illiteracy

I ran across a photo of an abandoned bus tucked into bush and brush. The morgueFile.com photographer's comment sadly stated, "This item has been decaying into the landscape forever." It made me think of our education system and I thought of illiteracy ... Ill litter I see. Hence, I created the first of my Postcards for a Purpose.

Whether our children attend public or private schools or are home-schooled, we are instructing them to the tune of The Three R's - Reading, wRiting, and aRithmetic. Let us all remember there are three more R's of importance - Right, Responsibility, and Respect. Education should be considered a Right for one and for all; education should be considered a Responsibility by one and by all; education should be treated with Respect by one and by all.

Education empowers. As we gain knowledge, we also gain self-confidence, self-respect, and self-satisfaction. Let us put education back on the bus and in the driver seat by encouraging the three R's and then some.

I say we should...
Let not our funds for education shrink; let not the numbers of our educated sink; let not our minds be left untrained to think.

Ohio - Postcard for a Purpose - Ruthi

Ohio Ruthi

Of course, I had to design my very own picture postcard for exchanging with others across the globe. I feel my postcard is sure to spread a bit o' sunshine here, there, and everywhere. A worthy purpose, don't you think?

Same Name, Same State?

If so, you're welcome to these postcards, too!

USA Postcards

The first post card exchange within the USA occurred between myself and Squidoo Lensmaster Marsha32. Marsha was actually adding my Ohio postcard to her daughter Jasmine's collection. I enjoyed the discovery of the native sunflower being the state flower of Kansas.

Poet Postcards

Poets Postcard Book

Poets (Postcard Books)

I found this lovely postcard book at a yard sale years ago. I bought it for numerous reasons: I'm a poet, I collect postcards, and I love books. Most importantly, however, I picked this book up and thought to myself, How I'd love to one day see a collection of my poems as a postcard book just like this one.

Photojournalist Jill Krementz captured the essence of each of the poets in this collection beautifully. Her artwork is outstanding, her unique visual style apparent, as she offers up thirty poets in this literary collection.

This postcard I've created is used as a sales tool and it comes with a matching magnet, too.

I designed these for use by myself as a business aid, but was delighted when I discovered my happy customers were ordering them, too, to pass along to their family and friends.

Merry Christmas Postcard

Every year my Aunt Helen creates her own handmade Christmas greeting cards. I look forward to her latest and merry artistic talent arriving in my mailbox each year. This past Christmas (2010) was no exception. I was delighted to receive JOY in the mailbox with this lovely holiday postcard and personal message on the post side.

I don't think Helen had an idea that I'd started a new postcard collection, so this was indeed a pleasant surprise. I'm thinking she must have been guided by a sunshine choir angel ... smiles.

Cool Lens, I use to collect vintage Halloween postcards, in better times; I had to sell most of them when my mother was ill. I love Ellen Clapsaddle.

A lovely collection of postcards - I have a very small collection, but this has inspired me to expand it! :)

When I was a kid, my folks (who were teachers) tossed my sis and me in their station wagon and we'd drive from New Mexico all the way to visit our relatives in Pennsylvania ... then across the country in the opposite direction to Montana to visit our best buddies (and adopted grandparents), then back down to New Mexico -- and one of the things my sis and I did was collect postcards from all the states and places we visited. Then we traveled overseas--to Guam, Japan, Hong Kong, Philippines, Taiwan, Okinawa, and a bunch of places in between -- we, of course got postcards in each of those places, too. I think my kids have picked up the habit, too. Congrats on a Squidoo masterpiece.

I love postcards and consider it a ritual to send them to special people whenever I travel. Am trying to instill the same gesture into my daughter.

I have had a postcard collection since I was a child but don't have it organized or anything - just stuck in a box and I keep adding to it. I need to do that. I love your very own picture postcard for exchanging with others across the globe. Wonderful.

Poets (Postcard Books)

Amazon Price: $25.00 (as of 06/04/2012)Buy Now

I've had this book of postcards for several years, purchased at a yard sale, in perfect condition. Photographer Jill Krementz captures the human factor of this wonderful collection of poets. This book stays upon my desk and the picture postcards of the poets inspire me to continue to hone my own poetic talent.
