How Can I Tell if my Pot Bellied Pig Is Sick?

An owner must learn the specific signs to look for to tell if a pot bellied pig is ill. There are 5 things to look for

1. Check the coat of the pot bellied pig. If the hairs are all standing up, then the animal may be sick. This can also occur to the pot bellied pig's coat when they are cold in spotty formations on the coat.
2. Take note if the pot bellied pig is not eating well. If there is one thing these animals love to do, it is eat. So if they eat but they are just not into it, chances are that you have a sick animal on your hands.
3. Pay attention to the position of the pot bellied pigs hind legs. If the hind legs are close to its front legs causing the animals back to hunch or bow up, then this is a sign that the animal is sick.
4. Verify that the pot bellied pig's skin does not a have excessive flaking or spotty coloring. Pot bellied pigs are especially susceptible to mange, sunburn and seborrhea.
5. Notice if the pot bellied pig is laboring to breathe. Pneumonia and atrophic rhinitis are two respiratory diseases that are not unusual in the pot bellied pig.

How do I Give my Pot-Bellied Pig a Shot when its sick?

type=textPrepare the medication before catching your pot-bellied pig. Having the syringe, needle and medication ready to inject before catching the pig will cause the animal less stress.

Catch the pot bellied pig and back it into a corner. They will normally sit down when backed up, and allowing them to rest against the corner with you in front of them will block any escape route.

Determine if the shot should be administered in the muscle or just under the skin. For the muscle, locate an area in the neck muscle. This area is easier to inject than any other muscle on the body.

Quickly insert the needle directly into the neck muscle, inject the medication and pull the needle straight out. This is the least-stressful way to give a pet pot-bellied pig a shot.

Follow different directions for giving a shot just under the skin. Pigs have thicker skin and are harder to inject under the skin. The needle should be held at an angle when inserted into the skin and only inserted 1 inch or an inch and a half.

What Should I Feed My Pot Bellied Pig?

type=textSince many pig suffer from obesity, it will be wise to feed your pig a low fat diet and low in protein

type=textBelieve it or not, but pigs are highly intelligent animals and as a result, you can housebreak them. So the answer is yes, you can home train a pot bellied pig even though it will not be easy at first.
Designate an area for the litter box or a place outside for the pig to go. It should be far away from the area that the pig eats. They won't "potty" near their food or sleeping areas.

Watch your pot belly pig for signs of needing to go potty. If it starts sniffing around looking for a spot, direct him to the designated area. Get them to the area as fast as you can.

Reward the pig for going in the appropriate areas. Give it a treat or a good pat. Pigs learn quickly and will soon learn what you are asking.
