Following a nuclear accident or event, radioactive iodine is released into the air which can then be breathed in and can also contaminate the local food supply, entering the body through food or through drink. - First let me say I am not a physician, but I am a qualified RSO (Radiation Safety Officer). Potassium iodide, as a prophylactic treatment, for exposure to an atomic cloud, from a nuclear accident is NOT recommended --unless you are about to be exposed to significant quantities of radioactive Iodine (I-131). If you have a thyroid, heart, or kidney problems this chemical can cause much more harm than good (think heart attack).
When a nuclear accident occurs there is a release of a whole spectrum of radio-nuclides, the one that I would be worried about is radioactive cesium (Cs-137) it is far more deadly than radioactive Iodine. Unless a there is a radioactive cloud that reaches the United States, do not take Potassium Iodide as a prophylactic treatment.
