Potato Printing

Potato printing - a cheap and easy decorating technique

You like stamping and you are searching an easy and cheap technique to decorate paper or fabric with your own designs?

I think you should try out potato stamping :) It's such a nice and simple technique and gives a great and really unique result.

It's also a fun activity for young childrens.

You need for this technique:

- Potato
- Knife
- Paper
- Fabric
- Paint (for example acrylic paint for paper, fabric paint for fabric)
- Brush
- Tissue paper
- Cookie cutter
- Designs

It gives a better result to..

.. apply paint with a brush onto the potato stamp than to press the potato into the paint.

Cookie cutter method

The cookie cutter method is very easy :)

Just choose a cookie cutter. I think a metal cookie cutter works a bit better than plastik - but you can use both. Make sure you use a potato which is large enough for the shape you use.

Cut your potato in 2 pieces and press the cookie cutter in one of the potato pieces.
Cut out everything which is on the outside of the cookie cutter and after that remove the cookie cutter. Use the knife and clean up the edges a bit and you are done.

Use tissue paper to remove the moisture from the potato.

I never press the potato into the paint and stamp with that. Often the print looks not so good.
Instead of that I use a brush to apply the paint to the potato. That way you have a better controll over the result.

Make your own stamp design

I made a few shapes for you. Just print them and cut them out.

Use a potato which is large enough for the shapes and cut it in two pieces. Put the paper shape on the potato and just cut freehand or use a pen and trace the shape on the potato and cut out the shape.

It's not so important that everything is very accurate - I think it's not necessary that everything is perfect :)

When you are ready, follow the steps I mentioned above. Remove moisture, add paint and stamp :)
