Having Trouble Potty Training Your 3 Year Old?

You think your 3 year old should be potty trained by now. After all, she knows how to control her body functions by now. Yet she still wets her diapers.

Don't worry too much, she won't be the first or the last 3 year old to go through this dilemma.

Tips for Potty Training Your 3 Year Old

Go get him "grown up" underpants. You can make a big show of throwing away his diapers and let him know that he has passed the baby stage and is now going to be wearing nice underpants like the grownups.

He will probably not want to soil his new pants and will run to the bathroom to avoid messing up his big boy underwear.

Get him his own chair. Let him decorate it and make it his own so he will enjoy using it.

Give them stickers for their chair also every time they use it to go potty.

Rewards for Potty Training Your 3 Year Old

If nothing else works, bribe him or her with M&Ms. This works for plenty of people. Offer them a certain number of M&M's for peeing and a certain number of pooping in the potty.

If M&Ms don't do it, think of something that your child really likes. Reward your child for going to the bathroom in some way that will make her feel good about going and make her want to go more often.

Can't Seem to Potty Train Your 3 Year Old?

Sometimes children seem to be well along the potty training stages, and suddenly regress. They start putting a up resistance and may absolutely refuse to use the potty. When this happens, even though it is very frustrating, back off. Don't pressure the child, or you will start a power struggle.

Again, rewarding them and encouraging them works best.
