How Long Does It Take To Potty Train A Puppy?

One of the most frustrating things about a new puppy is the training - in particular, potty training. How can you train your puppy quickly and successfully so you can start enjoying his company?

Read on to get some help...the sooner the better!

Training A Puppy

Consistency

type=textBy far, the most important element in the successful training of your puppy is consistency. The only way a puppy can learn is by repetition, and lots of it. You cannot show the puppy something once or twice and then become angry or frustrated when he does not understand what you want him to do.

Puppies need positive reinforcement and LOTS of consistent repetition. You need to understand before bringing that new puppy home that he will require a lot of love, attention and work when it comes to training. The very first thing that needs to be accomplished is the potty training.

Potty training can be especially challenging because if you have a brand new puppy, he will not really be able to control his little bladder until he is approximately 6-9 months of age. The muscles are still developing up until this point and it is difficult for him to control himself, despite valiant efforts put forth by both puppy and owner.

Keeping this in mind, it is best to keep a very close watch on your puppy and perhaps even take him outside every 1-2 hours so he really gets the idea that he should be going potty outside. Even though he may continue to have accidents in the house once in a while, with consistent effort on your part he really will begin to understand that he is to go outside to relieve himself.

Positive Reinforcement

type=textNever train your dog with the use of force, intimidation or outright scare tactics.

Positive reinforcement is the way to go, which includes a lot of praise and treats when deserved.

When your puppy does something well or does what is expected of him, you want to lavish the praise on him and pet him. Let him know you are pleased with his performance. Your puppy thrives on praise from you.

When he does not behave or listen, a firm "NO" or tug with a lease should do. If you are crate training your puppy, he may need a "time out" in his crate for 10-15 minutes until you are ready to try again.

Never strike or frighten your dog. Have you ever seen dogs cringe when you try to pat their head? It makes you wonder what kind of training they received when they were young.
