1. Recognize When Your Toddler is Ready. Some signs of readiness are;
Expresses an interest in the potty

Express the need to go potty (verbally or through body language)
Able to dress and undress
Uncomfortable in wet diapers
Stays dry for two hours
Imitates family members
Interested in big kid underwear
Has regular bowel movements

2. Introducing the Idea of Potty Training. One of the best ways to introduce the idea of potty training is with a book or DVD. Reading a bedtime story is a great way to get started with this. Also get your child to start sit on the potty, get him/her used to the idea and this can often start imitating family members which is a great sign they are learning.

3.Transitioning to The Potty. Once your child is getting used to sitting and imitating family members, start actually using it. Puchase a potty chair, or just use the regular toilet and as your child gets used to the idea, reinforce the behavior with lots of praise and hugs. Make the child feel proud of his/her accomplishment.

4. Use the Potty Alone. Once your child is getting accustomed to the idea of using the toilet, let them try it alone. They will learn to control their bodily functions and the best part is your child will be so excited once they are able to do it themselves they will come running to tell you about it. Again this is the time for a lot of praise and encouragement.

5. Use the Potty Away From Home. Don't be afraid or intimidated by the idea of trying to use the potty when out in public. To avoid accidents make sure your ask your child if you see the signs "of the need to go" and then head to the bathroom. Once your child sees that public toilets are not scary, they will gradually get used to the idea, and this will help reinforce good habits and behavior.
