How Do You Start Potty Training?

Potty training is a big step. If you are thinking of potty training at this time - then you are reading the correct lens!!

There is no such thing as the "right time" - it just has to be the right time for you and your child. The success of Potty training hinges on the readiness of your child. it is not age related necessarily. In fact, my children are 2 years apart and were both potty trained at the same time - that was a fun time in our household! But, once trained we saved SO much money!

For children who have a medical condition but are physically able to use a toilet, potty training need not be postponed but you may need to be aware the process may take longer than 'normal'.

We have provided our tips to help make your potty training a success for both you and your child.

Good luck!

Potty Training Tips

It's a daunting process but once you have succeeded you and your child will be very proud of yourselves and your pocket will be grateful too! In fact it can save you almost $2000 a year!

Here are some tips that we hope will help you in this process.
  • 1Is your child ready?
Signs such is your child interested in bathroom activities and can your child stay dry in diapers for a few hours at a time? All are indications that your child may be ready.
  • 2Use Rewards
Make sure your child is familar with the potty and is not scared to sit on it. It can be a good idea to move the potty into the bathroom and let them sit on it. Use a reward chart with stickers to encourage their efforts.
Go to the Reward Charts for Children On-line Store to see a selection of reward charts that are available on the market
  • 3Planning
Make sure everyone who cares for your child knows that you are potty training- friends, family members, pre school. Try not to revert back into diapers as it sends a mixed message to your child. Make sure it is a good time - no big family weddings or other important dates that could take away the focus from potty training.
  • 4Games, Books and DVD's
There are a great selection around that will help you and your child.
  • 5Patience!
Don't rush your child when sitting on the potty. Try to remain calm!
  • 6Consistency
Some think that potty training can be achieved overnight, but try to remain patient. If your child has an accident try not to get cross with your child - it will affect their progress.
  • 7Frequency
Keep taking your child to the bathroom, every 20 minutes if necessary. Eventually they will get the message!
  • 8Be Creative!
Perhaps a little white lie - that they are no longer making diapers and they need to wear big girl/boy underwear from now on!
