Potty Training Tips For Puppies

It is always important to start your new puppies potty training immediately when you get him home. Please try to remember though that at this point your puppies bladders and the control they have over them are not yet fully developed and there are going to be accidents.

The most important thing you can do when potty training puppies is to set a schedule and, more importantly, stick to it. Now much like working we have a set time that we have to be at work your puppy will need a set time to go potty. Remember that your puppy while potty training will need a schedule that he can get used to.

It takes a great deal of patience to work with a puppy. It is only natural that if a puppy has been playing then goes over to the dog bowl and gulps water then it will need to climate afterwards. So many times we forget this part and thing we are done playing but the puppy can only hold so much. Be persistent in your training.

Food and water given at specified times. I know a lot of owners like to leave food and water out for their puppy to eat and drink leisurely throughout the day. This isn't a bad thing, once they are potty trained. However, during the potty training process it can be disastrous. So put the bowls out of puppy's reach and bring them down for him about every two hours.

Designate a spot. By this I mean designate a spot where you would like your puppy to perform its business and always take your puppy to this spot when you want it to go "potty" remember to always use the same word when commanding your puppy to go.

Crate training is generally the most accepted method of potty training a puppy. When you can't be actively supervising him, he needs to be in his crate. Crate training is based on the fact that dogs really dislike soiling the area where they sleep. As long as you don't leave him in there too long, your puppy will hold it in when he's in his crate. The puppy should be in the crate at all times unless he's outside going potty, eating or being played with and actively supervised. Make his crate comfortable with a few old blankets on the floor and a few chew toys.

Make sure that when your puppy succeeds in going potty in the right area that you praise and reward him. This will make sure that your puppy learns that if he wants to get treats and good attention then he needs to go potty in the right places. As you know positive vocal praise is a great way to encourage your little guy.

When your puppy has an accident in the house, and he will, you need to clean it up right away so that the smell isn't there anymore. The smell can attract them to want to eliminate in this area and getting rid of it will help your house training efforts.

Potty training puppies isn't that difficult if you keep these principles in mind. As you can see above, routines are going to be very important to your puppy's success. It will also make your life easier since you'll know when your dog needs to go out.
