Potty Training Using Positive Reinforcement

Ranked #5,912 in Parenting & Kids, #198,710 overall

Positive Reinforcement

Potty training is a major step for the parent and child. You will finally be free of the costly diapers and your child will no longer be a baby, but a "big kid".

During potty training it is very easy to become frustrated. Your child is having to learn and remember a lot during this time. There is a reason why so many experts say to use positive reinforcement - it works! Positive reinforcement is very important to help them achieve their potty training goal and should be done right after they did the deed.

Picking Out The Potty Chair

First, let them go to the store with you to pick out the potty chair that they will use. If they get a really cool one or one with their favorite character they will be excited to use it.

Celebrate

Once they have successfully used the potty clap, sing, and do the potty dance with them. This will be lots of fun to let them know they are on the right track.

Potty Training Chart

Get a Potty Training Chart to hang in the bathroom. Every time they use the potty put a sticker on the chart. Once they have a week full of stickers let them have that toy or something else that they have been wanting for a job well done.

Rewarding Right Away

You can also give them their favorite piece of candy (after they have washed their hands) or another small toy each time they successfully use the potty.

Big Kid Underwear

Once they are ready for "big kids" underwear, let your child pick them out. If they pick out their favorite kind then they will not want to dirty them up.
