Puppy dogs have yet to understand how to control the urge to eliminate. Confinement facilitates potty training your puppy by placing him or her in a cage or crate without leaving anything at the bottom. Most dogs dislike eliminating in the place where they live and therefore, your puppy's cage or crate should only be enough to allow him to turn and lay down. A larger crate or cage is ineffective since this encourages your puppy to sleep or lie down at one end and eliminate on the other. Potty training your puppy continues while outside during supervised free time. Have a short and inexpensive leash preferably, one that is four feet long or so attached to your puppy's collar. Having this helps you gain control over the behaviors of your puppy like digging, chewing and biting behaviors.

Whenever you are potty training your puppy or dog, always use a leash to have better control and supervision over everything that is happening to your puppy or dog. Puppies are very easily distracted by many different stimuli. Leashes guide your puppy dog to the area where it is appropriate to eliminate. With your dog's leash, you can guide your puppy to the appropriate place at the right time.

Learn to teach your dog or puppy words for elimination or potty training words. These words signal your puppy to urinate ("go potty") or defecate ("go poop") at the right place and at the right time. Your choice of potty training words should be any word or phrase that you will be using consistently on a repetitive basis. Examples of these words include "get busy", "hurry up", "let's go", "do your business", and the like.

Remember that potty training your puppy is not an overnight affair. Potty training your puppy takes time, energy, a lot of praise, effort and tender loving care. By being patient and consistent with your methods, you can get your puppy dog potty trained the most effective way.
