Potty Training Tips And Advice

There is no fixed age for when you should start potty training, however, eighteen months is the earliest recommended age to start. For most children it tends to be around two to two-and -a -half years.

You will know your child is ready when he/she is capable of:

>> Letting you know that he/she wants to go

>> Understand the words for going to the toilet - "wee, wee" , "poo poo"

>> Knows that he/she is wet

>> Is comfortable and happy in themselves

>> Can sit comfortably and steadily without support

>> Let you child choose his/she own potty after explaining to him/her about this new venture.

>> Be in the right frame of mind yourself. It is easier to train in warm weather when a child can be left without a nappy.

>> Decide on a few positive training days and if possible at home during this potty training week in order to avoid putting on a nappy during the day.

>> Encourage your child to sit regularly on the potty, two hourly and after meals.

>> Increase fluids during this time.

>> Leave the potty within view and easy reach.

>> Use clothes that are easily pulled down.

>> All carers of the child should be instructed to have the same attitude to the potty training, in order to avoid any confusion on the part of your little child.

>> Girls often tend to potty train quicker than boys.

>> Later try to introduce your child to the toilet - using a step is advised in order that the child can sit properly and comfortably on the toilet.

>> At first avoid flushing the toilet when your child is sitting on the toilet as this can be frightening for them.

>> Show him/her how to use toilet paper and how to wash hands - its important to start off with good toilet habits.

The best key to success is to lavish prise on your little one performs in the potty and to avoid commenting if this does not happen.

>> Forceful potty training is very likely to be unsuccessful.

>> Domestic upheaval, for example a new baby, moving house, starting crèche etc can be a very stressful time for your little one, and is probably not the best time to start potty training.

>> Be flexible: sometimes potty training does not work the first time as you may have started too easily for your chills.; this is common, and if so leave it for a few weeks and start again

Your child will probably gain bowel control before bladder control.
