The Power of Now is one of those books that you have to be mentally and emotionally ready to read. If you're not ready, you probably won't fully understand it and the concepts will be meaningless.
I read the book a couple of years ago and didn't quite get it. I put it away and just recently I decided to read it again and suddenly it all made sense.
Basically the book is about focusing on the 'now' and not the past or the future. The concept of the book is that we spend too much time thinking, and that thinking involves either the past or the future instead of the present moment.
This is the cause of most of our problems and the stress and discomfort we feel in our lives. Focus on the now, accept the now and be happy with the now.
After all you cannot change the past and the future is yet to happen. The only thing you have any control over is the now.

The basic principle of the book is quite simple - nothing exists outside this present moment - the now.
Eckhart Tolle tells us that the past and the future are illusions which only exist because we focus on them in the now. We create the past and the future by imagining them in the present. But actually we don't even exist outside the Now. The past is gone and immutable and the future hasn't happened.
Think about it, if nothing exists outside the present moment, it doesn't exist at all. If you want to make changes to your current lifestyle and experiences in the future, then you have to create it in this very moment. It must exist in the now or it doesn't exist at all.
If you create a mindset of confinement and scarcity in the present then that is how your future will be. You will gain nothing by continually concentrating on what you want in the future without focusing your energy on the quality of your present reality.
Why work towards creating a future of joy and freedom if your present reality is anything but that state of affairs. The only power you have is in the present and that is what you need to work on, creating the life you want in the future by creating it in some form now, otherwise it will never exist.
This is pretty empowering stuff.

Some Techniques to Help You Get in the NOW
1. As often as possible, concentrate on your breathing. Focus on the air coming in and out. This helps to bring your attention into the now.
