Networking is a must for both off-line and on-line business. You have explained it all so very well. As we progress into Web 3.0, I must admit I like the idea of smaller groups much better for online networking. Since we usually can't meet face to face, getting to know a small group well seems to fit better in really being able to know how each member can help the other.

Well said, Bev. I think that the focus on smaller networking groups in Web 3.0, will lessen the frenzied approach to trying to be on every social network, and push us in the direction of networking in a more real way, with deeper relationships, more focused efforts and better results.

Great explanations Paula. Networking is a great way of not feeling isolated when you work from home. I certainly agree with your assertion about how social networking does and does not work.

    SquidAngel Blessings for you.

I'm just learning about networking and how to do it. I am not a natural business person and now I'm trying to build a freelance career. This is very helpful to me. Thank you!

Networking (in person) isn't something I have done a lot of since I started selling on eBay although I suppose you could count networking amongst those excited conversations I've had with people everywhere I go about eBay. I wish I was better at handing out my business card!

Good point. The thing about networking is that it is essentially one on one because you build a relationship with each individual person in small segments--at an event, in a chat, running into them at the grocery store, at another event, etc. Some of those turn into business relationships, others into referrals, and so on. To network effectively, you really just need to take some time to continually meet people.

A wise lens, lots of balance here and it shows your knowledge and experience with networking. Some folks are natural networkers and deal well with groups. Others, like myself, are best one on one. But we can all learn other methods and improve.

There is a good return on that learning to network investment

Networking is powerful stuff. I know in my job it is so nice to have that give and take, you learn those to go to when you have a problem, because they have walked the same path before. As I get more and more years I find a lot of people coming to me for advice, and it feels good to help!
    Great lens! Linda

Great example for Chef's little experiment. Here we are networking on a lens about networking. I have made a little list of things (maybe about 5 networking things) to do to promote a lens, then I have to walk away or I won't create any new stuff. Networking online or off takes a lot of time, but it's necessary. The trick is to not get so caught up in it that you don't have time left for anything else.

I have had some wonderful opportunities come my way in part through volunteering, or taking on responsibilities within organizations. It allows more people to see you in action, and know a bit more about you.

I have gained a great deal from social networking. Someone I met (and helped in a very small way) in an online forum, knew someone else, who knew someone else who got back to me - bingo! a new client. Since then I've had some great success with facebook. 5* for this informative lens

This is valuable information on how to be proactive in being a small business owner and getting the word out about the products and services you provide.
