Your Mind Power
Mind power is the most powerful force in the world. All of the books, inventions, and modern "conveniences" that we have and enjoy today started off as a thought in someone's mind.
Mind power is a force that must be cultivated and honed until razor-sharp. You must have the desire to achieve great things in order to use your mind power to its fullest potential.
It is that burning desire to use one's mind power that differentiates between the person who is successful in life and accomplishes great things and the person who is "just getting by".
You have probably heard the adage that we only use ten percent of our brain. What this really means is that only ten percent of our mind power is consciously and proactively used.
The remaining ninety percent is under the control of our subconscious mind, and is used for "fight or flight" reactions and other instinctive functions that we perform without really thinking about them. Also, this huge chunk of our mind power is used like a huge file cabinet to file away all of our life experiences.
This "file cabinet" contains incidents which we don't usually think about until a stimulus such as a song on the radio or a trip to our hometown causes us to recall the memory into our conscious mind.
To start sharpening up your mind power, learn to focus your attention and really concentrate on something, not just with the surface of your mind, but with your entire mind. If you are concentrating on a rose, for example, don't just sit at a distance admiring the rose.
Get up close and experience the unique color of the rose, the fragrance, the number of petals and how they are arranged. Deliberately focus one hundred percent of your mind power on that rose.
Do not let your mind be distracted by the call of a bird or the sound of a passing car. Pick a new subject each day and practice with it for at least a half hour. You will find that your focus on the subject and interest in the subject will become deeper and your mind power will become stronger every day.
Another important technique is to force yourself to want to know more about a topic that seems, at first glance, uninteresting. This would be an invaluable skill for students who must take courses that they really don't like and could care less about to graduate. Let's use politics as an example.
Politics is a subject that many people find either boring or distasteful. But, if you seek out the most interesting points of view about politics- and these days, there are many very interesting and extreme points of view on both ends of the political spectrum- you will find the topic is easier to concentrate on and learn, since the subject matter becomes livelier in your mind.
