Power Steering Pumps - Introduction
After conducting a great deal of search on the internet about power steering pumps, the parts, working principles and how to replace them I noticed that there are not near to enough resources on the subject. That is why I created this lens. You can check my other lens about steering pumps, where I talked about power steering pumps in general, gave detailed information about them and listed the main parts of it.
What I will do in this lens is to further expand the topic and go into details like how a power steering pump works, the problems seen in a power steering pump and its failure, and finally on my other lens I will discuss about the replacement of a power steering pump. Before going into the details, let me give some more general information about power steering and pumps used for it.
The concept of power steering is relatively a new one and has seen great advance in a short time. Now, nearly all the cars are manufactured with power steering built in. Basically what power steering does is to help the car steer in a better way and also it makes it easier and more comfortable to drive. With the aid of power steering, the amount of effort required to handle the vehicle is lessened. It consists basically a power steering wheel and a shaft attached to it which transmits the power. It operates hydraulically and is located at the front end of the engine.
Now, let me continue with the basics of working principles of a power steering pump.

How Does a Power Steering Pump Work?
The Principles of How a Power Steering Pump Work
There are basically three things we can discuss about in how a power steering pump works. The belt-driven pump, power steering fluid that is pressurized and the tension of the power steering pump belt.
First of all, you should know that those pumps are driven by belts and they have circular pulley mechanisms which are attached to their housings. The pulleys have grooves on their sides and they are driven by rubberized belts meshing finely with these grooves. The rubberized belts are attached to other engine components that are belt-driven and they are powered by the rotary motion of the crankshaft of the engine. Inside the pump, there are rotor mechanisms which rotate fast and pressurize the fluid.
With the motion of the power steering belt, the pulley is turned and so the rotor inside the pump. This is the point how the power steering fluid pressurized and pushes the fluid out of the pump to the next steering system component. The purpose of this fluid is to lubricate and remove the heat generated within the pump so that the steering system functions properly.
An adequate amount of tension in the belt is necessary for the pump work properly. It should neither be too loose or too tight in order to work effectively. What determines the tension of the belt is the specifications of each vehicle.
Power Steering Pump Problems & Failures
The Most Frequent Problems Seen in Power Steering Pumps
There are a number of problems seen in power steering pumps and here I will talk about each of them briefly.
Power Steering Pump Noise
There are some cases where the power steering pump makes a high level of noise that is not acceptable. The first thing that comes to mind that could cause the noise is that the pump is old and needs a replacement. Though, this is not always the case. The fluid level might also be the cause of noise. So it is wise to check it before deciding to replace the pump.
Power Steering Pump Failure
The failure of the pump might be due to a number of reasons like having completed its lifespan, getting one or more components broken, low level of lubricant fluid and wear out in the driving belt. Identify the problem before taking necessary action.
Lack of Power Steering Pump Fluid
The level of lubricant fluid in the power steering pump plays a vital role for the pump to function properly. If it is too low or too high you should compensate it accordingly.
Worn Out Belt
Sometimes, the driving belts of the power steering pump may worn out and stop operating or work in a poor way. Worn out belts should be replaced before they cause greater problems.
